When Spotify hangs in pause, I've tried to close Spotify and open the Google Cast application, which allows you to pause and resume whatever is being casted, and, surprisingly, it has the same problem: I press resume, the icon changes to play, and then it change to pause again in less than a second.
I think this is the most important and urgent issue with Spotify. I subscribed to use it with Chromecast and nowadays it's completely unusable, so I'm being pushed to look for another service to begin enjoying my chromecast. And I'm seeing in many forums that I'm not the only one.
Same here, tried with Galaxy S5, Xperia Z3 Compact and a Blaupunkt tablet. Everything with most recent firmware. Chromecast-Wifi at 5Ghz, 108Mbit/s, FritzBox 7390.
Same issue is discussed in google-forum:
Spotifys biggest competitor works fine with chromecast........
I also have this problem
I have emailed spotify with a link to this thread, and also a link to the google Product forums where the issue is being discussed however everytime that support reply, they ignore both threads and just ask basic questions like "have you got the latest firmware?"... If they don't know how to fix it then just say... don't leave us hanging on for months on end. Very poor service from customer support. Very dissapointed
Here´s someone with the Problem solved:

Is there anyone else to comfirm this?
I´ve contacted Support via eMail in that matter.
i have been emailing spotify support for over a week now and they are hopeless.
I sent them links to all the forums where people are complaining about this. They just keep sending me scripted replies back with questions i have already answered.
I have also now contacted google who asked for the links and said they are going to take it up with their product manager at/with spotify. Who knows if this will actually happen.
Either way i have been a loyal spotify customer for years now, have friends and clients who now use it as i have put them on to it. I'm pretty dissapointed their support is a total let down. Its fine to say "we don't know" or "yes we know about the issue and are working on it", but its really poor service to just keep fobbing someone off with no proper aknowledgement.
In february support set me up with a test account and this did NOT help. I had the exact same problem on the test account. Support told me the following and closed me request:
"Our tech folks are currently looking into it. A fix should be on its way soon. As soon as we have updates, we will let you know.
If you have any further questions, please let us know.
Thanks in advance for your understanding and patience in this matter.
We wish you a great day!

No update or fix has been released and I am still waiting paitiant. 🙂
I suspect that the problem is not with the code of an application, because the issue appears both with the Android version and the PC version. I imagine that it's something about net protocols, or configuration, or sysadmin, or system architecture or whatever else. I'm checking with the new Android update, and I'll post the results here.
Yes, the problem continues even with the new version recently updated from Google Play: I skip to the next song, and then it stuck in pause forever. No matter what I do, no matter where I control Chromecast from (PC o Android).
they sent me the test account, still no difference...
