Music Continues Playing After Headphone/Bluetooth Disconnect

Music Continues Playing After Headphone/Bluetooth Disconnect

TL;DR:  While listening to music through headphones, unplugging will cause music to continue playing through speaker

Many instances when music is playing through physical headphones or bluetooth and is then disconnected from my phone's (Nexus 6P) audio, Spotify will then switch over and continue playing music on my device's (Nexus 6P) speakers. Not sure if this is on Spotify or from Android 6.0 (Marshmellow) but this is completely unacceptable on either end. This doesn't happen 100% of the time and I'm not sure what the conditions are for it to happen.

Another problem is the floating notification. Usually exiting out of Spotify with task manager or pressing the X on the floating notfication will stop the music and close Spotify. However, a good number of times (not all the time), Spotify will continue playing and I will be forced to reopen it in order to pause the music.

Any solutions? Not even sure if this is the right place to post for help. If it's not sorry in advance.

Hi,

I have the same Problem when disconnecting from my Bluetooth Car Radio.

I have an Alpine IDE-178BT in my car and had never problems with connection or playback. Normally it should be like this:

Turn off Car => Spotify disconnects and playback ends

In the last few months it was like this:

Turn off Car => Spotify disconnects but starts playing on my Phone (Sony Xperia Z3 Compact with Android 5.1.1).

This doesn't happen 100 % of the time as kiwikiwipie said already but today I noticed that in most cases I was listening to recordings through the native Sony Music app. When I then jumped into my car my Radio first startet playing the recording from the Sony Music App via Bluetooth, I stopped the playback und started spotify so that it started streaming music from spotify and then I had the problem again (spotify continues playing after disconnecting form Bluetooth).

Now the strange thing: After this procedure I encouter this problem every time I jump in my car for the next fex days without having started the Sony Music app. Spotify ist the first app to start but still the same problem. After a couple of days the Problem is gone without having restarted the Phone or something else. This really is a pain in the ass. I have to take out my phone of my pocket to stop it roaring. Sometimes I even have to start the app again because its seemingly not running although the music is playing..... Very strange

kiwikiwipie: What devices do you use for playback and do you have the same problem with the seemingly not running app?

I an having the same problem with my music continuing to play after shutting my car (with BT) off. Doesn't seem to happen consistently, but it's consistently annoying.

Me too over stock car bluetooth. Note 4 with 5.1.1.

Same here

Nexus 6P

Turn headset off, music used to stop

Now

Turn headset off, music plays through phone speaker

Yes same problem. This used to work great and is definitely a bug and not a feature

Same exact issue on the Google pixel. Never happened on my Nexus 5 that was running Android 6.0... Someone help, it even continues playing while I'm on a call and it's the most annoying thing.

Have the same issue when disconnecting from BT car stereo with Nexus 6p happens everytime, Really annoying! seems as though it started when I upgraded to 7.0 Nougat.

Same problem, Android 6.0.1 on Note 4.

I too have this problem... Only started happening within the last 6 months or so though. Happened on my s7 with Android 6 and is now happening on my pixel with Android 7.

Hi all,

Yes. I have had the same problem and have been able to fix it. I'm running Android 6.0 and newest version of Spotify. What I found was that upon opening Spotify for the first time (since it had been cleared from my phone) all features would work fine. After Spotify had been open or frozen for some period of time (5-30 minutes) it wouldn't pause upon disconnect from headphones or Bluetooth. It would play out of external speaker. Also the floating notification would disappear.

Fix: Installed an older version of Spotify that works without any problems (went back two versions to 6.1.0.1088).
1. Uninstall Spotify on your phone
2. Download APK from here: http://spotify.en.uptodown.com/android/old
3. Don't update your Spotify app until they make a fix in future update.

The two newest versions on that link have that same problem on my phone.

Happening to me too but the part that is the most frustrating is that it was working perfectly when I had a free account. The day that my first payment came out of my account all the problems started. Spotify refuses to play on connect to my car anymore. When I turn off my car it continues playing in my pocket. If I get a phone call it plays over the phone, I cannot use my Bluetooth headset either because I can't skip or pause songs using the headset buttons anymore. I've paid for 1 month and I am already half tempted to cancel Spotify forever and go back to another app. This is too frustrating for me. I'm starting to really dislike Spotify now just because it is so frustrating. Every day I have to do a new trick just to get my music to work.

Galaxy S7 running 6.0.1

Did you try an older version of spotify?  As far as I can tell, its the newer versions that have this problem on many phones.

I just downloaded an older version now from the last post I saw. I will be testing it this weekend as we are going on a lodge trip. Here's to hoping it works and I can actually relax at the lodge.

Just a note to say I'm having the same problem. Happens with both bluetooth and headphones, and because i am so used to pulling my headphones out to pause music when someone asks me a question, it can be pretty embarrassing.

It's only started happening in the last week or two.

Running Android 7 on a Nexus 5x.

Will try the older version and report back.

I am also having this issue.

Galaxy s7

Just made the switch to my Pixel XL today and noticed this instantly. Really hoping this gets patched soon.

Hey guys, this sounds like a repeat of something which happened a year ago. I'm not sure if this and other similar threads have been noticed by staff and passed on to the tech team so I suggest one of you raises a new bug issue. Include links to this and the other related threads and maybe use the following headings for clarity:

Device/OS/Spotify version:

If everyone else then posts details of their device/OS/spotify version, it should ensure a quick response from the support staff.

This happens to me now on my Nexus 5 and Samsung S7. If I switch off a bluetooth device while Spotify is playing the phone waits about 30 seconds then starts playing through the device speaker. Sometimes it doesn't play if I don't activate the screen but this is probably 1 in 4.

With the problem of the widget disappearing from the notification screen too it means I have to unlock the phone, locate Spotify from the App Drawer and then press the pause button.

This has only started recently, please look into this urgently. The app is absolutely appalling at he moment, two major problems named here, there's no need to update all the time and break it. As far as the user can tell it's the same app as a year ago other than the downgrades.

I have the same issue with newly purchased Samsung 7 Edge. Spotify app will not turn off when Jaybird headset is turned off. I also turned off bluetooth app and Spotify still plays with icon visible in upper tray, home screen.  Latest version of Spotify app worked fine on 3 year old HTC DNA. When I turned off the headset the app turned off.

I downloaded older version of Spotify as suggested by AC2020x and it works. Thanks for the link. Why not just add a manual off button to the app?
