Hi @ifallious,

Thank you for posting on the Community!

There are two different battery settings that can affect the app's performance. These are the following:

  • Open your phone Settings > Apps > look for Spotify and tap on it > open the section called Battery > toggle on Allow background activity.
  • Open your phone Settings > Apps > tap on the three-dot icon at the top and choose Special access > open Optimize battery usage > tap on the Apps not optimized drop-down option and select All > look for Spotify and turn off battery optimization for it.

It's also worth checking that the "Allow background data usage" setting is toggled on for Spotify as well.

Let us know how this goes.

I alredy did that

Hi @ifallious,

Thanks for your response.

It's also worthwhile to perform a so called clean reinstall of the app, as this is more thorough than the normal one and ensures that no cached data will cause interference with the new installation of your app.

If the issue occurs again after your clean reinstall the app, then could you send us a short video of the situation and all the troubleshooting steps you've done, so we can advise you better.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

This happens to me too. It's very frustrating. A quick Google search makes it apparent that this is endemic across many phones for Spotify. Is there a working solution? I can't keep turning my phone screen on every 10 seconds. I've tried all the above solutions and more--this is a spotify problem. This doesn't happen with amazon music, nor youtube.

Hey @romeroge

Thanks for getting in touch about this and welcome to the Community.

Would you mind logging in to your account on a different phone to check if the issue persists there?

On another note, could you make sure that Spotify has all necessary permissions enabled?

  1. Open your Settings menu.
  2. Scroll to the bottom to find Spotify and open the app settings.
  3. Enable everything you see.

Let us know how it goes.

“Music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens.”– Maria von Trapp

I have the same issues and have done EVERYTHING Suggested. I've been a Spotify premium member since 2011 and am on the verge of cancelling my service.

Hi there @mikeelbr,

Thank you for your reply and for all of the troubleshooting you've done so far!

We're sorry to see that you feel this way. Let's try to fix this together!

If you have an SD card we suggest that you uninstall the app > turn off your phone > take out your SD card > turn on the phone again (without the SD card) > reinstall the app since the card can be corrupted.

On another note, can you check so that you don't have any pending OS update?

We'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Take care!

Live, love, laugh and listen to music 🙂

I have an S22 with no SD Card. I've set everything correctly to have Spotify run in the background, etc. I uninstalled the app 3 times and reinstalled. The issue is only when playing music on the phone and the screen goes black. It would continue playing if connected to another listening device like a Roku or Echo Dot. That was very perplexing.  After the 3rd install and it continuing to do the same thing, I gave up and played through another device while working from home and through head set while working at office. A few days later I tried again and now it's working. I can set phone on my desk at work and play music all day with the screen off. The ONLY thing I did differently on this install/config was not download my largest playlist and rebooted the phone a few times. My best guess is the speaker output on the phone was going to sleep when screen went black. Frustrating to say the least but it's working now.

Hey @mikeelbr,

Thanks for your reply.

We're glad to know that it's working now.

In case you see this behavior in the future, we'd recommend that you follow these steps (if you have the Samsung Device Care installed on your phone):

1. Go to Battery and Device Care.
2. Tap Memory.
3. Tap Excluded apps.
4. Tap +.
5. Select Spotify and tap Add.

Lastly, restart your phone.

Remember the Community is here if anything else comes up.

Have a great day!

I'm on a Galaxy Note 10 Plus and this worked for me. Thanks!

I have a S22 and this worked best!

I am using Huawei P20 Lite and I tried reinstalling the Spotify app, enabled all notifications, allowed the app to run in the background, basically all the solutions mentioned above that is applicable in my phone. But the Spotify app still isn't working and stops playing when screen is off even for just a few seconds.

Hi there @Cm39,

Thanks for the post.

Can you try this: Go to Settings - > Battery - > App launch and then set Spotify to "Manage manually" to see if that helps.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi everyone / Spotify team

I have a similar issue to the above where I start a playlist, lock my phone screen and then the app will only finish playing a single song before stopping. Unlocking the screen resumes the playback by starting the next song. I am streaming (music isn't downloaded) and connected to stable Wi-Fi. I enabled the permission "Nearby devices" when the app prompted me to.

I'm on a Samsung S20 FE 5G, latest software (One UI 5.1 / Android 13) according to my settings, no SD card (I have about 64GB of storage space left) and I've tried:

Any thoughts on what next please? 😢😂

Thanks very much!

Hey @mp004,

Thanks for your reply and for all the shared info.

Kudos for all the troubleshooting you've tried so far! In this case, we'd like to gather some additional info. Did you notice if this started to happen after a specific event, such as an OS update or any changes you've made to your mobile device? If yes, please send us the details.

Since you mentioned you enabled "Nearby Devices,", would you mind sending us a screenshot of said permission so we can better visualize it?

Lastly, we'd recommend going through some of the troubleshooting steps you can find here. We'd suggest checking the Game Boosting Features section if you have something along those lines installed on your phone.

Keep us in the loop!

Hi @AlejaR

No OS updates or any changes to my phone since this issue started.

I've just uninstalled and reinstalled the Spotify app (version 8.8.42.468) and reopened to get the attached prompts/screens for giving 'Nearby devices' permission. I've attached the screenshots of the permissions prompt in the Spotify app and the screens that follow to enable the permission.

As I'm on Android 13, I've followed the steps for Android 11 on https://dontkillmyapp.com/samsung (the link you provided) i.e.

  • Lock the app in Recent - I don't think I have recent apps as an 'area' on my version so cannot follow these steps
  • Battery optimization - my modified steps were Settings > Apps > Spotify > Battery > Unrestricted
  • Optimize battery usage - my interface differs and 'Optimize battery usage' is not an option when navigating via Settings > Apps > (⁝) menu > Special Access > Optimize battery usage.
  • Auto-optimize daily + Adaptive power saving - my modified steps were Settings > Battery and device care > Auto optimisation > Restart when needed > Off
  • Adaptive battery - my modified steps were Settings > Battery and device care > Battery >More battery settings > Adaptive battery > Off
  • Lists of Sleeping apps, Unused apps, Deep sleeping apps, Never sleeping apps - my modified steps were Settings > Battery and device care > Battery >More battery settings > Background usage limits > Put unused apps to sleep > Off > Checked the lists for Sleeping apps, Deep sleeping apps and Never sleeping apps and the Spotify app cannot be added to any of these lists (not shown on list of apps to add to these lists).
  • Game Boosting features - my modified steps were as follows
    1. Settings > Apps > Samsung app settings > Game booster > (turn everything off) > Block During Games > (turn everything off)
    2. Settings > Apps or Settings > Samsung app settings, Game optimizing service not present
    3. Settings > Apps > Game launcher > Disable

Spotify is now playing, when the screen is locked, maybe 4-5 songs (rather than the one song previously) before the music stops again, so it sounds like Samsung's automatic battery saving is still doing something despite me deactivating all the power saving for Spotify.

Again, any ideas welcome 😅

Hi @mp004,

Thank you very much for the reply and for your continued cooperation. Could you possibly reach out to Samsung's support team and ask them to look into this. We would like to know if they find anything so that we can know for sure where the cause of the issue is.

Let us know how it goes.
