Maybe the old version will get an update soon which, when opened, will say "download new package please"?
They did exactly that. They published a new version of the original app, but if you look at it, it's only ~1MB in size (down from almost 15MB). When you open this new version, it just show you a notice about Spotify needing and upgrade, and a giant green download button that takes you to the Play Store to download the new package. Once you install that, it will find your old (original) Spotify app, and suggest you to uninstall it (and it will provide an unistall button to do just that without leaving the new Spotify app). Lastly, the new version also shows you in the first run a little helper to remind you that all your offline content must be downloaded again.
It might sound more difficult than it really is, but that's because I kind of suck at explaining myself in English 😛
It seems they covered all the corners, and the app guides you through the upgrade process just fine.

Completely new app entry in the play store with a new package name. Looks like their signing keys might have been compromised.
So nobody with a current install will auto-update to the new version? Unintall the old version and add this one?
Existing users should get some kind of official guidance!
I downloaded the new version through play store. It created an entirely new version. Deleted the old version. Opened new version, says my version is not useable and I have to download the new one from the play store. Any ideas for getting out of this loop?
After the audio ducking problem/debarcle I have auto-updates switched off for Spotify. Will wait for the dust to settle and there are some folk who can say they KNOW it all works before jumping this time.... Once bitten with untested software, twice shy... 😞
fwiw, just got it to work. for some reason the old version was still hanging around in my play store. maybe wait an hour and re-check.

Wow, what's going on, Spotify? If you're completely ditching the existing app with all the reviews and downloads there must be a very serious security problem?
And, despite if there's a very serious security problem, I don't think existing users will be pushed the new version... as it's a different package!

Ok so the old version becomes a "helper app" to get the new version and and new version removes the helper app, if present.
My Google Play account is still showing the original Spotify version at ~15MB, and no update available, so I guess this is a phased rollout.
My google play market says that my Galaxy ace isn't compitable with the new 'Spotify Music', but the old spotify worked properly. What should I do? Now I haven't got any Spotify on my phone 😞
Agreed - seems odd that a device restriction has been added. Either a mistake or part of the 'security' update. Only option (for now) might be to find an apk for the older version and sideload it. Not ideal :-S
