Now playing notification not appearing

Now playing notification not appearing

Hi,

I just recently switched to a new phone, from a Samsung to a Motorola Edge 50 Fusion. Previously whenever I played a song, the Spotify app would start a "Now Playing" notification that displayed the same information as is shown on the lock screen and the in-app Now Playing bar. This notification doesn't appear on my new phone. Why? Is this something that can be fixed? I've already performed a full reinstall (cache cleared and everything) and enabled all notification in my device settings.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there @jonathanjansson,

Thanks for posting here and welcome.

In this case, we'd suggest you make sure Spotify has permission to send you notifications. According to this Motorola Support article, to see certain notifications from an app, go to settings> Notifications> Tap App notifications. There, locate Spotify, and turn notifications on for all categories. You can manage other Spotify notifications by following these steps.

If the above doesn't do the trick, please send us the following info:

  • The exact Spotify version you're running on the affected device.
  • The exact OS version you're running there.
  • Are you using some home screen launcher replacement app?

Keep us in the loop!

Thanks for the reply. I double-checked the notifications were enabled, but I am still not seeing the "now playing"-notification.

Spotify version: 8.9.98.488

Android version: 14 (not sure if that suffices - please let me know if you need to know things like my latest security update, kernel version etc.)

I am not using a home screen launcher replacement app.

Hey there @jonathanjansson

Thanks for getting back to us.

Could you make sure that Spotify has all necessary permissions enabled?

  1. Open your Settings menu.
  2. Scroll to the bottom to find Spotify and open the app settings.
  3. Enable everything you see.

If the aforementioned steps don't do the trick, would you mind checking if the OS of your device has any pending updates?

Let us know how it goes.

Hi,

I gave Spotify access to everything I had the option to (including
notifications) but that didn't solve it.I had an update pending that needed
a restart, so I restarted my phone but the notification is still missing.

Hi @jonathanjansson,

Thanks for the reply.

Going off of the Motorola article again, can you please make sure that you have Pop on screen turned on. Usually this is suggested to block notification banners, but it may also be blocking the Spotify notification. Make sure it's turned on to ensure it will work.

If the issue persists afterwards, since all settings are correct, we can only conclude that the issue is somehow related to your device. Consider reaching out to Motorola's support team and asking them to look into this further.

Hope this helps.

I have the same issue here using Android 15 on I Google Pixel 8 so it is not specific to Motorola. I can confirm that, like the original author of this post, all necessary permissions and notification access is allowed for Spotify. The notification for now playing used to appear but ceased to do so only a couple of weeks ago. I have changed no settings since then and so I can only assume something has changed in the background at spotify (or with android that spotify hasn't accounted for...)
