Just to clarify for my understanding, you say that you cannot use your smartphone as a controller over your tablet? Does it work when your tablets screen is turned on? Do you have an app killer installed? You can programme these app killers to kill apps as soon as the screen turns off to save power. If the app killer isn't the problem, then maybe you need to reinstall the app and see if it is just a bug? ☺
I just guessed as i don't use this feature which comes with spotify. 🙂
