I have a premium plan. I am in the US. I use Spotify on PC(Windows 10) and Android (Samsung Galaxy S22 Running the latest software UI ver 5.1, Android v13 with all patches).
I play some long playlists in order. I have noticed lately that all of a sudden when playing my playlist from my phone, Spotify will start playing random songs that are not in my playlist. Once it starts playing the random songs, it will not go back to my playlist until I stop playing and pick a song in my playlist again. These are NOT songs in my playlist. It happened twice yesterday on the same playlist and I saw it the other day on a different playlist. I don't have the enhancement thing turned on either. This is very frustrating and annoying.
Hey there @lbearm,
Thanks for reaching out about this here in the Community.
First up, could you make sure the Smart Shuffle isn't turned on in your playlist? To turn it off, you just need to tap on this icon until you see this .
If it's turned off, could you let us know if the same happens on your PC or if it only happens on your phone?
If it happens on both devices, we suggest that you try logging out everywhere by following the steps here.
Let us know how it goes.
Yes, I made sure shuffle is off. But on top of that, I have verified that the songs that are playing are not part of my playlist so even if shuffle is on, they should not be played. So far I have noticed this happening when playing from my phone (Android) and not when playing the lists from PC. I have verified I am running the most recent version on my phone.
Hi there @lbearm,
Thanks for your quick reply.
In this case, it's possible that you already have some songs in the queue ready to start playing. So, we'd recommend you check if there's something in the queue to play next. If so, you can hit the Clear queue button to see if you notice any difference or remove the songs you don't want to listen to.
If that's not the case, could you let us know if this happens while you're streaming directly on your phone or when you're listening to music via Bluetooth or using the Connect feature?
Lastly and just to confirm, have you tried logging out everywhere by following the steps we sent previously?
We'll be waiting for your reply.
I know it is not songs in my Queue as I very very rarely add a song to my queue. I almost always play from one of my play lists and in two of these instances I know the songs played were not songs I would have added to my queue. I will log out from all devices and see if this happens again. The challenge is that I usually listen from my PC and only use my phone for streaming when I am driving or some other rare occasions. Also, it is adding artists that are in my lists so if I have this playing as background music I don't always notice right away. The two times I noticed it while it was happening I was streaming from my phone on a bluetooth speaker. The other time I noticed the problem when reviewing my history and I believe it had been while connected to android auto.
This same exact thing is now suddenly happening ng on my android as well. Doesn't do it on the PC but when in the car, my Android phone will add whatever random songs it wants to on my playlist. When I go to look on my playlist to delete them, they are not part of my playlist and do not show up. I don't use the queue so there's nothing in the play queue to delete. Those instructions did nothing for me. Spotify, fix this right now or I'm dropping premium
Hey folks,
Thanks for your replies and for the info shared.
In this case, we'd like to gather some additional info. Would you mind checking if you can download the playlists in which you noticed the described behavior? Give it a try and let us know how it goes.
On another note, it's always a good idea to secure your account in these cases to make sure everything is in order. You can find out more on how to secure your account here. We recommend checking for anything suspicious on your Account Overview page and removing all apps connected to your account. You can easily reconnect the apps that you use whenever you want. If you notice anything suspicious you can remove it with the REMOVE ACCESS button.
Additionally, we suggest you access your account page and there you'll have to sign out everywhere, using the button you'll find by scrolling to the bottom of the Account Overview page. This will log you out of all the devices you open your account into.
Lastly, would you mind sending us the links to the songs you noticed are added to your playlists? You can share them by following these steps.
Keep us in the loop!
This just happened again! I am getting really tired of all the bugs and poor design for spotify - especially as a premium customer. I have taken all the steps you have recommended and this is still happening. Also, re-reading your message, I believe you are failing to understand the problem. Please get this fixed.
The problem is not that songs are getting added to my playlist. The problem is Spotify stops playing songs in my playlist and starts playing other songs. I do not have enhancement turned on. I am not at the end of my list. There is no reason for Spotify to spot playing my list.
The most recent example spotify stopped my list and then played https://open.spotify.com/track/5z2Gef9D3UgRquZXe7UUW4?si=7ef56a6ba2f74f31. It kept playing songs related to my list and one that was in my list (from a different spot in my list) until I stop it. I then had to go look up where I was supposed to be in my list and start playing it again - very annoying.
And it happened again today. The one thing I have noticed on these last two instances is that the app will play three songs from my list before it start playing random songs.
Hey @lbearm,
You've mentioned this happened while connected to a Bluetooth device or Android Auto. Can you please test again and make sure this is the only scenario in which the issue occurs? Once we've narrowed down the possible cause, we can forward this to the relevant team for further investigation.
Thanks!
It is only happening on my phone (Android) and I have not seen it happen when listening via Windows. When using my phone, I am always using a Bluetooth connection of some kind (Speaker or Android Auto).
Hey @lbearm,
Thank you for keeping in contact and for the info sent.
To continue investigating this issue, could you record a short video where we can take a better look? You can attach it to your next response by using the Insert Video option in the post editor. You can also upload it to Google Drive and share the link with us (make sure the video has the permissions for anyone to watch it).
Also, since some updates have been released to the app and the OS, include in your next response the exact OS version you're currently running and the Spotify version you have installed on your phone. This will give us a better look at the issue.
We'll be on the lookout.
I am on version 8.8.28.409
I really don't know what you want in a video. It is not like I can show a series of steps that induce the bug. It just happens while I am listening. It does not happen all the time either. This last time I went almost a month between incidents and then it happened twice in back to back days. Please let me know what you are wanting recorded and I can try to get something for you.
Hey @lbearm,
Thank you for keeping in contact and for the clarification.
We're asking for a video in order to try to understand more about the issue you're having. In the video, we want to see if you receive any kind of notification when the playback changes to another track. Also, with it, we would be able to see if the song is changing in the middle of the playback or finishing/starting the track.
Taking this into account, could you record a short video when it happens checking that the Play Queue has no songs added and that the Enhance/Smart Shuffle is not active? We know it is not an easy task, but it's necessary since we were not able to replicate it on our end.
Also, since the songs can be changed from a different device that has your account logged in, it would be really helpful if you could confirm if you've already tried to Log out everywhere as suggested by @AlejaR. With this we can make sure there's no other device messing with the playback.
We appreciate your cooperation and patience regarding this issue.
We'll be on the lookout.
What your asking for on the video is close to impossible. I am not going to have a video recording happening all the time every time I have Spotify playing. That is absurd. I have logged out of everywhere. I very rarely add songs to the queue directly and when I do, I am wanting to listen to that song next and then let it go back to my playlist. I have verified that Smart Shuffle (which is really very stupid and why I have to listen the way I do) and the Enhance Playlist are both off multiple times. I don't use either of those features and every time this happens I check to make sure they were not accidentally turned on. The challenge is that I have the music playing in the background and sometimes I am a few songs in before I realize Spotify has stopped playing from my playlist and started playing random songs - they usually are songs by an artist in my playlist or a song very similar in style to my playlist - it is acting like the Enchance Playlist feature is turned on - it just is not turned on.
If I new I could perform some specific steps to make this happen, I could get a video for you. Unfortunately I don't and the only way to get you your video would be to capture my screen constantly when using Spotify. That is just not a realistic option.
Hey @lbearm,
Thanks for your reply.
We suspect that this happens due to a playlist-based radio being started. Next time the issue occurs, can you please check the Playing from... field at the top of your Now Playing View on mobile and take a screenshot of it?
Cheers,
The next time it happens, I will try to grab some screen shots for you. If it is doing a playist-based radio, then the bug would be it starting that. I listen strictly from playlists. I play them in the order of the list based on my custom sort. I go to the song I want to start at in the list and then click play for that song. It should keep playing songs from my list until done. That is not happening as it will start playing songs not in my list (The last few times it has played three songs from my list before playing others).
Ok. It happened again today. I choose the playlist I wanted. I then searched for the song I wanted to start with and clicked play on that song. After it played that song, it went to other random songs instead of continuing with my play list like it normal does and should do. You obviously have a bug here. When I looked at a song that was playing, it did say "Playing Recommended . . . " instead of my playlist name. I am not sure what is causing this, but it needs to get fixed. Today I was not using a bluetooth speaker either, I was using a wired connect to my car's audio port.
Hey @lbearm,
Do you have Autoplay toggled on in the app's Settings? If so, it's possible that it's causing this behavior.
The "search" feature in playlists is actually a filter, so it only shows results that match the given keywords. If you play one of them, the app will automatically create a new queue with only these songs. When that queue is over, Autoplay automatically generates a new one with similar tracks so that the music never ends.
A workaround is to add the desired song to the queue instead of playing it directly from the filtered results - that way it won't interrupt the flow of your playlist.
It's also possible that the app detects the new connection to your car and generates a new queue. In that case you need to open your playlist and play it again.
Take care.
Well this is where the design of Spotify is very frustrating the their refusal to make recommend changes by their users is also frustrating. There are much better ways to do what I want to do, but Spotify does not have the necessary features for that.
I understand the search is like a filter, but that is the only way to make Spotify do what I want. I search for a song, then click play and than "X" out of the search. That puts me back into the full list without the filter. Normally this then keeps playing my list from that exact spot (Since Spotify refuses to add a feature to remember where you are in a playlist, this is how I have to make it work). I don't want to add the song to the queue as I want it to play the playlist from that point on. This normally works just fine. Every once in a while it will play 1, 2 maybe 3 songs from my playlist and then randomly start playing recommended songs. This is frustrating that I am three months in and still getting this bug and no one seems to want to fix the bug. Which just adds to the frustration that Spotify refuses to add features it needs.
You obviously have not tried to play a play list in Auto mode if you don't want suffle play on - this is impossible without pulling over turning off the connection, starting the playlist on the phone and then connect to the car again - totally unacceptable solution. [Again, a refusal to fix how Spotify works in a car].
