Storage use

Storage use

App is using internal storage instead of SD card. Please fix. I'm not getting paid for doing a workaround clean install whatsoever. I'm paying for a service and demand it to be fixed. Get a couple developers and address the issue as a real company would do. I'm cancelling suscription otherwise and strongly encourage others to do the same.

Hey @DavidIsAngry! Welcome to the Spotify Community!

The SD Card is quite a common issue, let me show you the following possible solutions:

  1.  Backup your SD card and then try to format it in the phone before installing Spotify. If you've taken the SD from a previous device there may be old conflicting files which can create issues and cause the Spotify app to Force Close.
  2.  At the bottom of the settings screen in the Spotify app there should be an option 'Storage'. Open this and select the storage location you want your cache, if changing location the app will transfer existing cached data to the new storage. Note that if your device does not have an SD Card or the SD is unreadable the 'Storage' option will not be visible in the settings screen.
  3.  If you have upgraded your device to Android 6.X Marshmallow or greater then make sure your SD Card is not formatted as 'Internal' memory. Unfortunately formatting an SD Card to be used as Internal memory called 'Adoptable Storage' creates issues with the Spotify cache as well as possibly causing an SD card to fail quicker. If you have done this then you will need to re-format the SD card. More details about Android Adoptable Storage can be found here. Also check the permissions for the app and ensure the Spotify app has all the required permissions. Please see the official Android guide to updating permissions on Marshmallow here.
  4. Try a different SD card!
  5. Moving folders:
    1. Delete downloaded songs
    2. Go to device storage/android/data -> move com.spotify.music to SD memory card /android/data (It might already be there i'd just overwrite it, donno if it matter or not)
    3. Re-download all the songs.

Please let me know if any of the options work out for you!

Thanks. I think scenario is the third one.

However: SD card per se is not an issue. The issue is poor program maintenance.

Scenario three clearly demonstrates that the application is not being maintained properly. App should be updated to use latest libraries and API provided by android.

Saying that something is not supported because relevant people do not feel like doing their work is a poor strategy.

Is there a place to raise a ticket or something?

Thanks in advance.

Once an SD card has been fornatted as internal storage, the android OS presents one pool of internal storage to apps so I'm not sure it would be possible for an app to work around this. Quite honestly, adoptable storage has many shortcomings and is only useful on old/cheap handsets with very little internal storage. This is probably why many manufacturers don't support it.

Ok Joe. I appreciate your help. So you solution for the issue is buy a new Phone? you are truly a genius.

However, that is in the case, that you are right. But guess what. You are completely wrong.

I have several other apps installed, that let me choose storage flawlessly.

So if you have no idea please don't waste my time.

Thank you very much.

Regards.

That was incredibly rude.

I agree Joe, yes it was indeed.

There should be some kind of support from Spotify instead of pocketing all profits and making users fix issues.

It would be ok for a freeware product.

Sorry Joe.

To contact support, please fill out the online contact form. If, for whatever reason you would prefer not to, or you cannot use the form, support can also be reached on twitter by reaching out to @SpotifyCares, or on Facebook by sending a message to the Spotify Cares Facebook page.

I have the same problem, and I'm also a premium subscriber. Verizon Galaxy S7, app does not give me an option to save to SD card. After deleting the app, restarting, re-installing, manually giving Spotify storage permission in Android, then starting the app I'm able to see the option for storage 1 time in 5. When I select SD card I get a message saying that my files are moving, then the app goes wonky, shuts down, then I get a notification that Spotify can't access my external storage. Also, after numerous fresh installs, Android App manager showed Spotify using 10.9 GB of internal storage, however, after deleting the app my internal storage did not go down 10.9 GB. I pay to use this service, and I travel a lot overseas so I use external storage to listen to my music. Everything was working fine two versions ago. Please fix this ASAP.

Oh, and I did chat with Spotify about this earlier, and they told me to reformat my SD card. I didn't do it at the time and called BS, but then I noticed my camera wasn't saving to my SD card either. So I reformatted my SD card...twice...and tried the previous clean install process again. Still didn't work. But my camera now saves to my card again.
