For some time now spotify has automatically selected the external SD card for its cache as long as there was more free space available on it than in internal storage. There is nothing to work on - it's done.

If your cache is on internal storage and you recently added an external SD card, all you need to do is go to spotify settings, scroll to the bottom and delete the cache. Log back in and download or listen to some music. It wil create the cache on the external SD card.

Shout if you need any help.

Hi! I've got my new phone today (HTC One M8) with an additional 64 gb sd card. But when I tried to download the Spotify app, it kept putting it on the phones internal memory, even though I have like 60 gb off space on the card. I want to put it on the sd card because the internal memory isn't enough. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you already had spotify installed before popping in the external SD card. If so, just follow my instructions in the post above yours.

I haven't, the sd card is new and so is the phone

Sorry, I just reread your post properly. The app itself can only be installed to internal storage but the cache will be created on the external SD card so any music you download or listen to will be cached there.

I see, but I've started downloding some tracks now, and it still puts them on the phones internal memory, so it doesn't seem to work

Or hang on a second, when I'm looking at the information about the app it says that 0,00B is saved on the sd card, but when I look at the information about the sd card, it's filling up. That must mean the music is saved there. Weird though that it doesn't say that in the app info. Thanks for the help!

Strange. There isn't a folder called com.spotify.mobile.android.ui on your external SD card? You're using android 4.4.2 I guess - have you checked to make sure any updates have been installed?

I've been using Spotify on my M8 with SD Card for 2 weeks now. Initially setup with SD Card inserted then Spotify installed.... I've downloaded some playlists which have all gone direct to the External SD Card successfully.

Yes, it's not clear when looking at the App Info as it does show everything in 'data' as opposed to 'SD card data'. This is because when you download playlists for offline use they are downloaded as 'Cache' to the SD Card and not 'Application Data' files. Hence why you don't see this affecting your data use or the 'Internal' app cache.

I have the same, or similar, problem. Just downloaded a bunch of music. The app claims that the music was all stored on the sd card. However, my primary storage dropped by 500mb and a memory analyzer app that I have shoes tons of new files on the main ("emulated") storage. What gives?

Here's the only thing that worked. Completely uninstall then re install Spotify. The unnerving part is that the app showed the many gbyte's as being on the sd card, but they were not. NOTE: sd card was originally installed after the first install of Spotify.

This simply does not work.

Spotify is useless if I cannot use my 64 gig sd card

It´s not Spotify, it is Android version 4.4. preventing storage in SD cards. Has anyone found a solution for it??

I got a file editor and deleted the spotify folder in the phone storage after following the trick on the web. That finally worked.

Hi There,

I just got my htc m9 with 32gb of memory and bought an SD card with 32 GB. I installed spotify before i bought the sd card, I deleted the cache of Spotify but the tracks are still being saved on the internal memory. What am i doing wrong????

thanks!

Hi there,

You are not doing anything wrong and nothing is wrong neither with your phone.

Apparently new Android 4.4 Kitkat prevents from writing any data on your external SD card, except pictures and videos you take with the phone camera and crap like that. So Spotify data will be saved on the internal memory of your phone, no matter what you do.

For what I read on the internet so far, the only way to skip this is rooting your phone. I don´t want to root it but the only reason I got an SD card was to save Spotify music on it. It´s ridiculous... I think Spotify developers should do something about it and soon!!

Please let me know if you find anything solution different than rooting... thanks!

Hi @vandijkerwin Spotify sets the cash location on install of the app. You'll need to uninstall and then reinstall to get your cache into the sd card. Use my troubleshooting guide to do this properly (link in signature)

Can confirm that after clearing  cache, uninstalling, I also had to do this for the app to use my SD-Card for storage, it only  put some cache files there before.

Spoiler

- If using an external SD card to store your cache (Offline Playlists) on Android 4.4.2+ then make sure when installing the app you have more free space on the SD card than in your phone memory. Another tip is to set the download quality to 'Extreme' as this sometimes helps ensure the right location is being targeted for the cache

Hi Daniel,

I've seen your troubleshooting guide all around the Spotify forum as I've been searching to try to figure out why my Verizon Galaxy S5 refuses to store my playlists on my SD card. I've followed each step of your guide and still cannot seem to get it to work. The best I've gotten it to do is save the playlists on BOTH my internal storage and SD card. I even tried to completely fill up my internal storage to see if I could trick it into only being able to save onto the SD card. I've been trying to do this for way too long. I feel crazy. haha.. any advice?
