tapping play / next on wireless earphones doesn't start Spotify anymore

Hello,

I used to be able to put on in my wireless earbuds and tap play/next to begin playing music on Spotify, now I have to actually open the app myself and then play a song for it to work properly. It used to just play music with just simply tapping play/next as soon as I put my wireless earphones on. 

I spoke with a support employee and they told me to log out, restart then log back in. It didn't work. 

Methods used already: 

-Forget Bluetooth earphones, paired again

-Log out, restart device, log back in 

-Unlink Spotify as default music player via google assistant, then re-link 

I use the following devices: 

-Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 

-Google Pixel 7 

Some help would be greatly appreciated.
