Music Monday

#MusicMonday Review - December 2024

osornios

#MusicMonday is the hashtag I've been using for quite a while to share music recommendations from up-and-coming artists. Always fresh, and always different, trying to look for trends before they become one. You can check November's review for more music.

This is it, the last one of the year. As always, a diverse set of genres, themes, and grooves makes it a memorable 5-step trip around the world. Give them a listen, with a word from the artists themselves.

Drenched – Daisystompers

Drenched.jpg

Don't fall asleep at the wheel
We could have been friends, instead you're irrelevant

Could have sold the lot by now
A day at the races, you lost your wager

The world is just too small for you
Go f your ego, cry in the mirror

To begin, let's go to Launceston, Tasmania for an Alt Rock track about big lads, brittle egos, and what happens when booze is added to the mix:

"It is inspired by some drunk middle age guys that tried to steal merch from us at a show, when we confronted them on it they tried to get violent and then got thrown out of the venue. They were pretty old so they probably should have known better. But when alcohol is involved some people are just beyond saving.

The lyrics are half things that they said to us in the altercation, and half our reflections on the event."

INAUGURAL – NIGHTCLUB

Inaugural.jpgIt's all the same, they make a pact,
At midnight in the club not coming back.

It's a nightclub suicide and you're feeling alright,
It's a nightclub suicide, and you're going to die.

We dance all the way to Sydney, Australia for a New Wave-y Synth Pop track that invites you to join the Club, dressed in black, with no friends in sight:

"NIGHTCLUB was one of those tracks that just wrote itself. It's an anti establishment song that we wrote in hope of unmasking what dance music’s vague lyrics are actually trying to say. It's a song about modern disillusionment."

Zero Point Energy – All That You Want

ZeroPointEnergy.jpgAnd it comеs down like a bomb
It’s your shadow it sticks to you
It surrounds you as you run
A filtered signal is coming through
Brings the sky down all at once
And you just hope that it runs it course
But it comes back even worse
As if that’s all that you wanted

And it brings
And it gives
And it’s all your life
But it costs
All you have
Every single time
Is that what you want?

Let's fly all the way to Brooklyn, NY for a Shoegaze-infused Indie Rock track about the patterns that we build. The past, the future... it's geometry. Band member Ben explains:

"The song speaks to feeling trapped in a cycle or a way of life that isn’t serving you and having to work against yourself to find a sense of freedom. An ongoing sense that you have to constantly be out running yourself or else things will fall apart.

It comes from a kind of paranoid mindset but I think in writing about it there's a sense of hopefulness to be found. Ultimately it's about choosing to live as best you can. 🙏🏼"

Pato Sabático – El Corrido de Caito

PatoSabatico.jpgCaito está en su casa

Vendiendo marihuana
Mira fijo por la ventana
Por si se aparece la cana
Y se lo quieran llevar
Por hacer lo ilegal

Y se lo quieran llevar
Privado de su libertad

Tres años le van a dar
Por hacer lo ilegal
Privado de su libertad

We now travel far, far to the south, all the way to Santa Fe, Argentina, for a Folk Punk track about behaving badly while you can, until you come face to face with the law. Cue the sirens:

"For this song I was inspired by a real-life experience of a close friend of mine. Musically I like to think of it as a fusion between Stay Free of The Clash and other artists that inspire my like Juan Cirerol and Johnny Cash."

Two Headed Horse – Lamplighters

TwoHeadedHorse.jpg

Fearing that I might become another unlit streetlamp

I take long strides down a lonely boulevard

towards a hotel that I know well

it's slowly sliding into hell

and it will surely be expecting me

We finish our year in London, England for an Indie track about being idle in the rain, sad as a sinking moon, missing a smile in the dark corners of autonomy:

"It was a mix of reading a lot of T.S. Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and imagining the end of an all-consuming relationship from a melodramatic POV. I'm fascinated by the language of heartbreak, and how hard it is to express linguistically."
