Who makes spotify's playlists?

Who makes spotify's playlists?

I LOVE Spotify, I do! But I want to question who puts the spotify playlists together and on what are they based?

I think there is a huuuuuge room for improvement!

1. They are so incredibly commercial with only songs of now. I was listening to the karaeoke playlist - where are all the classic karaeoke songs?! I'm not interested in what is being currently played on the radio?! It's a karaeoke playlist!

2. Clearly American, because there tends to be a significant selection of songs in Spanish?? As I am in Australia, this seems very weird to me.

3. Referring back to point 1, I feel like the people or machines that put these lists together are not true music lovers. A music lover is across all genres of music and deep into the genre too - not just the stuff on commercial radios that touch on that genre. For example the 'EDM' playlists - if you are an EDM lover you would probably mostly hate those playlists! It's all really commercial stuff!

Maybe there is another reason for such terrible playlists that all sound relatively the same, but I would like to suggest that Spotify is really missing a huge part of it's market. It's a shame because Pandora leaving Australia has left a gap that Spotify could fill.

The other funny thing is, that Spotify sponsor festivals with more indy sort of music (of all types) and yet they themselves would never put this music on any of their main playlists.

Hi All,

I have since learnt that the reason behind Spotify's terrible playlists is that they heavily favour the big commercial record companies (e.g. Sony, EMI), because they obviously spend the most money with Spotify. Read more into this, and you may not like what you find out. It's a shame because I thought this platform was born out of a love of music and wanted to support creative artists. It is not. And musicians are really losing out (even those with the big record labels behind them). So, I suggest do what I do, make your own amazing playlists filled with all kinds of musicians, and don't waste your time on the Spotify curated playlists - they're just there to make more money for the big labels.
