Macbook Desktop app keeps crashing after new update

My Question or Issue

After the most recent update the app crashes if I click on the Spotify icon in the dock or click the my account button on the dropdown menu in the upper right corner. I've tried a clean uninstall/reinstall and it worked fine until the new update blue dot showed up and once I updated it kept crashing again. Another thing is after the update only the bolded Spotify menu shows up on the menu bar with no options if you click on it.

Same problem here, I think the problem has to be with the osx system, i can see that we have Os Sierra 10.12.6

I am also having the exact same issue

I also have this issue since updating to the latest version today.

After about 10 seconds after starting Spotify on Mac, the app instantly closes itself. Doesn't matter if I have music playing or not.

Interestingly I'm also on MacOS Sierra v10.12.6.

Temporary fix:

I've been able to fix this temporarily by downloading the Spotify Desktop app from the Spotify site at https://www.spotify.com/us/download/mac/ (which is an older version).

Once this version is installed, navigate to /Applications/Spotify.app using the Finder. Then select the File, and then go to "File / Get Info". In the window that shows, select "Locked" to lock the file. This will prevent the updating process from Spotify to happen automatically. Instead, it will show a "Spotify needs your permission to install an update" window when you next start it, which you then can Cancel to prevent the update and run the older version. Hope this helps!

Same issue, again on a macOS Sierra 10.12.6 laptop
(macbook pro mid-2012, United Kingdom, Premium)

The current version available to download, 1.1.72.439.gc253025e, works, so reinstalling spotify is a temporary fix

but it then downloads a new update (1.1.73.515.g85e282e2) in the background, and upon closing and opening the app to install this update, it crashes at launch.
Think it was working fine yesterday!

Hi all, now it's working fine after deleting the old application. Download it again then re-install. My version now is: 1.1.72.439.gc253025e

Hey there folks,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community.

@Lecir - we're really glad to see that it works as it should for you again 🙂

For the rest - can you confirm that you followed the steps that's provided in this article? There's some more steps to help thoroughly uninstall the app from your phone so if you haven't, we'd highly suggest it since the steps will make sure there's no old cache files causing this.

We'll keep an eye out for your replies 🙂

Take care!

Live, love, laugh and listen to music 🙂

Same problem also on Sierra OSX. Completely uninstalled following the instructions linked above and reinstalled.

Still not working.

Yes I followed these steps, but reverting to an older version from the website is not a permanent solution.

Downloading an older version (1.1.72.439.gc253025e) from the website works, since the bug is introduced in the latest version.

Once the earlier version runs for the first time, it automatically updates to the latest version on a next restart, which then reintroduces the problem. It looks like locally saved state or cache doesn't have anything to do with this bug.

Hey folks,

Thanks for keeping us posted.

Could you please provide us with the following info? We'll investigate this further.

  • A video recording of the issue.
  • If running a clean reinstall in safe mode makes a difference

Keep us posted.

Updating from the problematic version 1.1.73.515.g85e282e2 to new version 1.1.73.517.gbef50fdb seems to have fixed the issue for me.

Can anyone else confirm?

thanks for posting this- I was waiting until there was confirmation of a fix before turning updates back on!

Seems to be working again for me, although maybe a little slower than normal.

Hi folks,

Thanks for letting us know that the issue has been resolved with the latest release.

Don't hesitate to reach out again if the issue returns.

Take care!

The problem is not resolved with the latest Spotify app on Mac.

I currently have running Ventura 13.1. I followed all the steps in the article "Jeremy" provided. I have tried everything, Updated my Mac, uninstalled corrupt files, uninstalled "caches" and Spotify from my library, shut down my Mac, and installed a new Spotify app, I even tried installing the PREVIOUS gen app (including 11.9-11.12), I checked to make sure my SIP was enabled (indeed SIP is enabled), and yet NONE of these worked.

Each time, the spotify app (on Mac) tries to open, a black screen appears, then immediately crashes.

Not a single support rep is able to help. They ALL ask the same questions and provide the same ineffective solutions. Once they realize they provided no help, they pass you along to the next rep to waste your time. I have ALREADY spoken with 6 maybe 7 different representatives of yours! None of which were able to help me. INCLUDING “higher level of support” and “escalations team”. Escalations team supposedly made a "ticket" back in OCTOBER 2022 and yet still no solution. I need your HELP!

Have the same issue as Matt....

Have done 5 clean installs and it crashes to blank screen.

Have deleted PERFS file to get me back to a login but the outcome is the same on the desktop app for the MAC.  It's completely dead.  No idea what to do next as have followed all the steps.  Repeatedly.

Hope there's some easy fix as this is no unusable for me on the Mac.  Tidal works (just saying).

Here's what is happening to me....And this is consistent after 5 clean installs.  The APP hangs, goes to black screen and i have to force quit.  Then when i restart it it opens at black screen. I then delete the PERFS file to at least allow me to log in again and the cycle repeats.  Frustrating....!

Hey @Jarvis007,

Thanks for reaching out.

Can you please let us know your exact device model, OS version and Spotify version, so we can investigate further? Also, can you please try clean reinstalling as described here, but this time in safe mode?

Keep us posted.

I am trying clean reinstall in safe mode now.....

Details of my set up are:

Model Name: iMac (yes it is quite old from 2015 but running well)

  Model Identifier: iMac17,1

Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Core i5

  Processor Speed: 3.3 GHz

  Number of Processors: 1

  Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

  L3 Cache: 6 MB

  Memory: 16 GB

  System Firmware Version: 499.40.2.0.0

  OS Loader Version: 540.120.3~22

Running Operating System:

MacOS Monterey

System Version: macOS 12.6.3 (21G419)

  Kernel Version: Darwin 21.6.0

  Boot Volume: Macintosh HD

  Boot Mode: Normal

Spotify App Version

Spotify for macOS (Intel)
1.2.3.1115.gd61a8f5c

Thank you for all advice.  Will see how the safe boot goes!

Was semi confident that the safe boot would work.  It did initially.  Upon boot back up in normal mode, spotify was active and functional.  Was feeling good.  Did another restart, just to be sure and the black screen came back.  So not fixed.

One thing that is odd that i notice is that Spotify boots upon start up now.  It never used to and is also NOT in the MAC start up processes.  So that is a little strange.
