Spotify crashes on Windows 11 on "Play next"

Solved!

Spotify crashes on Windows 11 on "Play next"

Hey, ive been having problems recently with my spotify app, i restart my computer daily and have tried clearing cache, reinstalling the app, updating windows, enabling and disableing hardware axcelleration.

The problems im having is that it constantly has micro stutters when listening to music. Also, when im playing games, spotify often will fully freeze when going to the next song. I often dont notice this right away but soon after notice i no longer have music playing when my game begins stuttering. I then have to open task manager and struggle to get spotify to close as it uses 20Gb+ of ram.

It likely has to due with the fact that my playlist is over 600 songs and im aware that using a smaller playlist will likely solve all of my issues but is there a way that I can continue to use this playlist without this happening?

I would also like to mention that music doesnt have to be playing for this to happen, often i pause the music while in game and only notice the issue due to lag in game when i run out of ram.

Hi there @Zachwm,

Welcome to the Spotify Community! Don't worry - the amount of songs in your playlist is unlikely be the root cause of this issue.

Which version of the app are you using? It's worth reinstalling Spotify from a different source to see if that does the trick: if you downloaded the app from our website, try the one from the Microsoft Store instead, and vice versa.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers 🤘

Hey @Zachwm,

Thanks for your reply and for the info shared.

We really appreciate all the info you kindly sent. Since you mentioned you're noticing ram usage climbing, there are a couple of things you can try next:

  • Disabling the hardware acceleration. To do it, open the app, and go to the three-dot menu at the top left. There, go to Help> Troubleshooting> Disable Hardware Acceleration and Restart.
  • If you didn't sync local files in the desktop app, disable this feature. To do it, click your profile picture at the top, and select Settings. Locate Your Library tab and switch Show Local Files off.
  • Clearing your host files. You can follow the steps in this article to do it.
  • Running your computer in safe mode to rule out any issues with your default Windows settings and basic device drivers. You can follow the steps in this article to do it.

If the above doesn't do the trick, and because of the info you kindly sent us, we'd recommend considering clearing your ram to boost its memory and see if you notice any changes.

I origionally had the desktop app and when i tried reinstalling i did try the microsoft store version which had the same issue but switching back to the direct download again seems to have fixed the issue for now with minimal testing, thanks for the tip. Ill come back again if i notice the issue resurfacing.

After working for a few days the issue is back, im using Spotify for Windows (64 bit) 1.2.39.578.g0ea3f38b.

Hey @Zachwm,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop!

Just to confirm, does this happen when only using the Spotify app on your device, with all other applications closed?

Also, do you notice any difference when using the Web Player?

Let us know how you get on.

Yes, I closed all background apps and I am currently watching my ram usage climb by about 25MB/Second. I've never noticed any issued on the web player but i will try using it more often to see if anything happens.

I've tried these fixes and i cant seem to find anything to help, even when in safe mode i quickly noticed the stuttering and i found nothing in my host files. I use my pc often and i dont notice any stuttering ever except on spotify.

Hi there @Zachwm,

Thanks for keeping us updated.

As we mentioned, having large playlists shouldn't be the source of the issue, but we still could check if this is happening because of your account. To test this, try logging in with a different account and check if you still get these stutters when listening to music. It can be a relative or friend's account, or you can create a new account for testing purposes and delete it later.

On another note, would you mind sending us a video recording of this behavior? You can attach it in your next reply in mp4 format, or you can also upload it to YouTube or Google Drive and make it public, so we can visualize it.

We'll be here.

Ive been trying things and still nothing seems to be working, I reinstalled windows and am still having the same issues, a different account makes no difference nor does a shorter playlist. I havent been able to get spotify to run in safe mode though when i click to open it, nothing happens it shows loading for a split second and then just stops.
Here is a video of the issues i am experiences with the very slow response when changing the time of the song as well as the stuttering throughout.

Hey @Zachwm,

Thanks for the additional info and the video. Appreciate the time you took to reinstall your OS!

It's unlikely that this is caused by your internet connection, but to make sure we've covered all the bases, can you try connecting your computer to a hotspot on your phone or via USB tethering? We've also noticed you have Canvas enabled, so check if disabling it makes any difference.

Also, please confirm if you were able to test this out some more using the web player.

Keep us posted.

None of that seemed to make a difference but i was able to download all of my songs and use spotify in offline mode which seems to solve any issues I had been having.
