Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info (if you haven't already):

  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far
  • A video showing how things look from your end when this issue happens

Thanks! We'll pass the info on to our tech folks so they can look further into this. In the meantime, you can try the workaround of disabling Gapless playback and the Equalizer in the app's settings to see if that does the trick for you.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread to stay tuned!

It does not happen on a Iphone with the same account. It happens no matter what i am playing, album / playlist / etc. If you read my original post again carefully you will see that i state the spotify version at the end. My device is up to date.  Also, see attached screen shot. I have noticed that if a song plays silently, and instead of skipping forward or back i just let it play, it plays forever, silently. See the time in the screen shot. The song is only 2:05 long, but the play time is 2:40. Surely this is enough for you to declair this a propper bug!? Can you please escalate this?

Hi,

Will add my voice here as well. Same issue for month now.

Sony Xperia 1 V

Android 14

Spotify 8.9.6.458

Premium Duo plan

Random silence, playback time just going on, no change to next song.

This happens on all audio outputs.

Please do not suggest me clean installations and try with different account, I already had intense discussion and tests with Spotify support.

The only thing I noticed that it happens with albums. Listening to playlist seems ok.

My understanding is that it went to developers. But it starts to be so frustrating that I'm questioning why I'm paying for this.

Adding this to help narrow the problem. I had this playback issue but found the reasoning behind it (for myself anyway).

My ultimate culprit in fixing this was a 3rd party app called Wavelet, an EQ app for Android. It's unfortunate because Wavelet is an amazing EQ app. Disabling Wavelet fixed this Spotify issue. If anyone else is having this behavior, check for a 3rd party EQ app at least, or more specifically Wavelet. It sucks, but in the meantime, I'd rather not cancel Spotify for an issue I can workaround for now. However, it'd be really nice if it was fixed.

For postherity, more details below:

Using a Pixel 7 and Pixel Buds Pro, issue would occur. When not using headphones, or using a different pair of bluetooth headphones, the issue doesn't happen (tested with Sony XM4s as well as Google Pixel Buds Pro).

When using Spotify on PC, Mac, or iPhone, all while using the Pixel Buds Pro on each one, the issue does not occur. My Mac has the Boom 2 EQ app running but I have no EQ on my iPhone, both played fine without issue. I haven't tested an EQ app on the iPhone.

No other media app while using the Pixel Buds Pro, or in general, behaves the way Spotify is, the issue appears to be isolated to Spotify.

  • Pixel 7 running the latest Android 14 patch (but this issue has occured over 3 different Android patches)
  • Spotify reinstalled, cache cleared, downloads cleared
  • Permissions granted for the app
  • Many phone reboots
  • Disabling Wavelet was the only thing that fixed Spotify

Hey folks,

Thanks for all the info you've shared with us so far!

If you haven't already, could you make sure to check @AlejaR's comment here and send us the rest of the details you haven't already? We'll need to investigate the issue further and for that, we'll need as much info as possible such as:

  • The exact Spotify-version you're using
  • The device this is happening on and OS-version
  • Does it happen even with Bluetooth or when connected to a different device
  • A screenshot would be very helpful (you can attach it to your next response by using the Insert image option in the post editor, only make sure not to send any private info)

We'll be on the lookout 🙂

I have the exact same issue, and I've done everything (removing cache, uninstalling, reinstalling, clearing memory etc etc) except a factory reset. The problem occurs regardless if connected to a Bluetooth device or not. As for a screenshot, it just looks like it is playing but without the sound.

I'm using a Sony Xperia 10IV on Android 14 and Spotify version 8.9.6.458

It happens when just playing through my phone speakers, through wired headphones and when using a Bluetooth speaker. It doesn't seem to happen on my partner's iPhone but with the problem being so intermittent and us only using his phone for Spotify occasionally, I can't be sure it would never happen there. It doesn't seem to happen on my PC, but again I haven't used my PC for Spotify much this year.

Hey there folks,

Thanks for all the additional details, we appreciate it!

We've passed on the info to be looked into by the right team. In the meantime we recommend keeping the app up-to-date to stay on top of any new released fixes.

Many thanks!

With this issue being reported so widely and reproduced by the community, will we get some confirmation here or in Spotify Android patch notes to let us know that a fix has been deployed for it when one is found? This issue affects me as a subscriber almost every time I use Spotify.
