Do local file playbacks also support artists?

Streaming music from spotify supports the music industry, but I have been wondering, when I play a local file linked to a song on the Spotify library does that count towards the playback count the artists get payed for? If not, does it still increase their popularity rating?

Also, I have some foreign music that is not available on Spotify in my country, but is available in other regions and can therefore still be linked to the Spotify catalog. Do those playbacks also generate revenue and/or popularity rating?

I'm asking because if local file playbacks don't support artists I would want to unlink some tracks and stream them instead, and if unavailable songs linked to local files generate revenue it would be worth the effort to manually add more of my favorite artists' music to my Spotify client and playlists.

...so I'm guessing this info is not generally known/available, and the people that do know are either not going to (this part of) the forums or they don't want to share the info because of reasons.
