Lowered bitrate from 320kbps to 256kbps on Premium

Solved!

Lowered bitrate from 320kbps to 256kbps on Premium

According to this page: https://support.spotify.com/us/article/What-bitrate-does-Spotify-use-for-streaming/

Premium quality is now 256kbps Ogg Vorbis, which seems to be a very recent change, it used to be 320kbps.

Can you please clarify this? What is the actual quality used in any given situation (desktop app, web player, iOS/Android app)? And if you have decreased the bitrate, why have you done so?

Hey @HenrikStevn

Sorry for the confusion.

I talked with Spotify staff and they can confirm that the highest Premium bitrate is still 320kbps and it has not been changed to 256kbps. The support article that incorrectly stated the highest quality as 256kbps has been removed from the support site until it can be updated with the correct info.

Please see this help article instead:

The highest quality offered in the mobile and desktop apps is 320kbps.

I am told that the web player is 256kbps, which is up from the quality the old web player had.

That's awesome, so actually there is a quality increase for the web player. Now, if only the queue would be brought back, for everyone who cannot use the desktop app 😉
