Nursery rhymes should be exempt from discover weekly suggestions

Nursery rhymes should be exempt from discover weekly suggestions

My Spotify is currently completely ruined by the fact that I play so many nursery rhymes for my child while at home in the house, as my smart speakers etc use my Spotify account. My discover weekly suggestions, which used to be brilliant, are now entirely made up of nursery rhymes, which means I basically cannot use that playlist anymore and I am no longer able to discover new music like I used to. Nursery rhymes should be exempt from counting towards discover weekly suggestions because it will be mostly adults using their own Spotify accounts to play songs for their kids and they obviously have no interest in those songs for themselves. Any child that is at the age of enjoying nursery rhymes will almost definitely not have their own Spotify account so these songs counting towards discover weekly is completely pointless I would say.

I'm sure hundreds and thousands of parents would agree with this - Let's get our Spotify new music suggestions back on track and stop kids completely ruining our accounts!

Hey there @simonds1,

Sorry to hear that. The most effective thing you can do here is just keep listening to the stuff you enjoy and Spotify's recommendations will be adjusted accordingly. Still, some other things that are worth trying are:

  • excluding playlists with nursery rhymes from your taste profile - that way, listening to those playlists won't affect your future recommendations.
  • using the Not interested button in the Music feed - the content you mark as "not interested" will instantly be removed from the feed and won't show up again.
  • hiding songs - songs you've hidden won't be played by the app and the app will automatically skip them. You can hide songs via the mobile app from the three dots menu > Hide song.

It's also worth checking out the Spotify Kids app. More info here.

Cheers 🤘

Hi Yordan,

Thanks for your helpful reply. The issue I think is the fact we play Spotify using a smart speaker, as I assume most people would do in their homes these days. So we would say "Hey Google, play wheels on the bus" or whatever song we want to play. This way, it's not playing songs from a playlist, so I don't think your suggestion of removing a playlist from my taste profile would work for that situation? Also, I have already looked into the Spotify Kids app, but it just doesn't integrate into a smart home very well. Or at all really. I would have to manually pick up my phone (which could be somewhere else in the house) and go into the Spotify Kids app, manually search for a song, then manually connect to the speaker, then play it, etc. All of that stuff is just not feasible sometimes when you have your hands full with a child and you just need the convenience of being able to talk to a smart speaker.

Thanks for the additional info @simonds1. I see what you mean, and while the Kids app doesn't support Spotify Connect at the moment, there's a Live Idea about this here, which you may find interesting, so feel free to check it out and show your support.

In the meantime, if you have Premium Family and there's an empty slot in the plan, it's worth creating a new Spotify account and adding it to the plan. You can then disconnect your personal account from your smart speakers and link the new one instead, which you can use for playback at home - that way, your personal account won't be impacted and you can continue with the aforementioned methods to refresh the recommendations you get from Spotify.

Hope this helps. The Community is always here if there's anything else we can assist with.

Take care 🙂

Hi Yordan,

Unfortunately I have tried that aswell - I created a Spotify account (a 'normal' one rather than a kids one) and tried to link it to my smart speakers, but the smart speakers seem to want you to sign into the Spotify app on your phone with the account you want to link to them, so I would be in exactly the same boat as I would have to sign in to my phone with my child's account. So when I then get into my car or whatever, it's using my child's account which is signed in. I've tried literally everything I can think of and there just doesn't seem to be a way around it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and I really appreciate your suggestions ☺️

Regards

Simon

Hey again @simonds1,

Thanks for the response!

In the Google Home app, you should be able to link your child's account by having to only initially log into their Spotify account in the app on your phone. Afterwards, if you log out of your child's account from Spotify and log into yours, it should still remain in the Google Home app and linked to the speaker.

Could you test this with the steps under Add multiple Spotify accounts from the article @Yordan shared in this post? It'll be very easy for you to play music via voice commands.

Thanks and let us know if you've got any other questions 🙂

I have kids and so my music is often tailored to their tastes. So when I go to a SPOTIFY created playlist, I don’t want it to generate what it thinks I like because it is too often based on what my kids like. Spotify really disadvantages parents with children.
I had several favorite playlists in the past but now they have all changed into “made for you” playlists which completely defeats the purpose of me getting away from the music I usually listen to with my kids.
