Joining a duo whilst traveling abroad

Solved!

Joining a duo whilst traveling abroad

I am currently on the free plan and I want to join my boyfriend's duo. We live together in the Netherlands. Currently we are traveling together in North and South America. In order to be able to use my own Spotify at all, I have had to update my country in my profile (it's currently on guatemala but we are on our way to Mexico). Because my boyfriend's account is paid, he didn't need to update his country. Now, Spotify won't let me join his duo "because we are not in the same country". It is not possible for me to change my country back to the Netherlands, I can only update it to wherever I currently really am. How can we work around this?

Hey @ninjamongki,

Thanks for getting back to us.

We fully understand your frustration, however this limitation was set to prevent fraud and unfortunately, it can't be manually circumvented on our end. If you're not currently located in the Netherlands and your account is on free, you'll need to update your account setting every time you travel to a new country.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Hey @ninjamongki,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome.

With a free account, you can only be abroad for up to 14 days before the system asks to update the country to match your location. Since one of the requirements for joining a Premium plan (Duo or Family) is to live in the same address, if your account and your boyfriend's account have different countries, you'll not be able to join.

Your boyfriend's account doesn't need to change the country because with an active Premium subscription you can travel abroad without losing your plan.

In this case, in order to join the plan, you'll need to have the same country registered on your account, and since you cannot select a different country than the one you're located in, you'll have to wait to go back to the Netherlands to try it again.

Hope this helps. If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks and I'm sorry but that is ridiculous. We are living together,
traveling together, and now paying together for a Spotify family that I
can't join? There must be a way?

Ok thanks. So now I have changed my account to premium and I was able to change my country and to join. But apparently this means that, for this month, I am paying €10 and on top of that together we are paying €13. That seems unfair. This is actually more of a fraud than it would have been to just let me in on the preexisting paid duo.
