Didn't cancel my old subscription before joining student

I've only cancelled my old $12 subscription after I applied for student premium. Does anyone know if that matters or I'd have to apply again? Cause everywhere says I need to cancel beforehand!

What kind of subscription have you had and what payment method did you use?

It was the normal one, $11.99 monthly and pay by credit card
