Can I change from Premium Duo to Individual Premium even if Im not the owner of the subscription?

Solved!

Can I change from Premium Duo to Individual Premium even if Im not the owner of the subscription?

Plan

Premium Duo

Country

Mexico

Device

PC, Android devices

Operating System

(Android Oreo, Windows 10)

My Question or Issue

I was sharing a Premium Duo account with mi ex boyfriend but we don't live together anymore and now I want to change to an Individual Premium account without getting in touch with him. I've been transfering my part every month to his bank account, but I don't want to have anything in common with him anymore and I don't know if I can do it without losing my playlists and music history in the process.

Hi @havetskvinna,

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community, and welcome!

No worries, you won't need to contact the plan manager in order to leave the Premium Duo plan and start your own Premium Individual plan. Also, changing subscription plans won’t cause you to lose any of your playlists, saved music or listening history, since you can keep your same Spotify account.

You can leave a Premium Duo plan by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your account page
  2. Under Your plan, click Change Plan
  3. Scroll to Spotify Free and click Cancel Premium

When you leave the Premium Duo plan, your account will revert to the free service and you can then subscribe to your own Premium Individual plan here.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and have a good day!

Thank you so much! I'll do it ASAP!

Hey what happens on their side, when I cancel does it make their (the previous duo account manager) account go to Spotify individual too? Or are they put on a free membership.

Hi @YellowTable7_

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community, and welcome!

If you’re a member of a Premium Duo plan and you cancel your subscription to the plan, it won’t cause the Premium Duo plan manager’s account to switch to Premium Individual or to the free plan. They would still be the plan manager for Premium Duo, despite currently being the only person in the plan.

Feel free to also read more about how Premium Duo works in this support article and in this FAQ article

How about if you are the Premium Duo manager of the account and want to remove the guest from the plan but do not want to damage their account in any way. If I just make my plan Premium Individual what happens to their plan?

Hi @LeeBruce,

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community, and welcome!

If you’re the plan manager of a Premium Duo plan and you switch to Premium Individual, then the account of the other member from the Premium Duo plan will revert to the ad-supported free service at your next payment date (which you can view on your account page), unless they switch to a new plan before then.

Reverting to the free service wouldn’t cause the other member from the old Premium Duo plan to lose any of their playlists, saved music, or settings, and they’d still be able to log in and listen with their same Spotify account while on the free service; however, they wouldn’t be able to listen offline to music (unless they subsequently subscribe to their own Premium plan or join someone else’s Premium Duo/Family plan), since listening to music offline is a Premium feature.

Feel free to read more about switching between different plans on Spotify in this support article, and let me know if you have any other questions.

I was on premium duo and moved to a different country.  The duo subscription has lapsed and I have reverted back to the free plan. So I paid my subs for individual premium but nothing has changed. I'm still on the free plan. Now two payments have been debited from my MasterCard and the order history still shows the currency for the plan manager for duo. I have messages from my service provider showing that payment has been made to Spotify for individual premium. How can I solve this.

Hi @TyTy7,

It sounds like you have another Spotify account for which you’re being charged, so I suggest reading this FAQ article for information about how to locate it.

I also recommend checking with your Premium Duo partner, family, or friends, since they could have accidentally used your payment info.

Let me know how it goes, as well as if you have any other questions.

Hi, so i own and pay for the duo premium plan and i have already payed for this month, if i change to individual would i have to pay for the price of individual again or will the price change to individual next month?

Hi @Puni_punn,

I can confirm that if you switch from Premium Duo to Premium Individual, the system will not charge you for Premium Individual right away. Rather, you’ll keep the Premium Duo plan until the end of your current billing cycle, when you’ll be charged for Premium Individual instead (the price will change automatically at that time).

Help. My partner and I split up I've just had rhw notification to say I'm.now on a free account and lost access to premium duo.

When someone removes a member from duo does it happen straight away? I thought it was the next billing cycle? Or has he just not paid his bill again?

Hi @Brooke232,

Yes, if the plan manager removes a member from their Premium Duo plan, that member’s account reverts to the free service immediately.

However, if the Premium Duo plan manager cancels their plan instead, both users in the plan will remain on Premium until the remaining Premium Duo time ends.

There’s a chance as well that the plan was canceled because of failed payments; however, this is not info that we can provide (and neither can Customer Support in this case, as they would have to be in touch with the plan manager specifically).
