Is Spotify reading my e-mail attachments and auto-adding songs based on it?

Solved!

Is Spotify reading my e-mail attachments and auto-adding songs based on it?

Plan: Premium

Country: Somewhere in Europe

Device: Macbook Pro, new one

Operating System: Big Sur

My Question or Issue:

The strangest thing. Based on a scanned image of handwritten song titles in an e-mail, I was recently adding songs to a new playlist I'm putting together. Soon after beginning this process, I started getting the prompt "This song is already in your playlist" for probably something like a bit more than half of the songs I was adding next. I selected "add anyway", figuring I may have added them previously without remembering.

When I finished adding all the songs I wanted, I went into the playlist and checked. Sure enough, there were *a bunch* of duplicates. All the duplicates had been added to the playlist within a few seconds of each other – which means I hadn't just added them previously and forgotten about it. For each song I added, received the "already exists" prompt and selected "add anyway", the song had already been added, only a few seconds before.

Two questions related to this:

1. Can someone please enlighten me as to what's going on here? The only logical explanation I can find for this is that Spotify is reading from the open tab with the scanned image in the e-mail, and "doing the work for me". This theory sounds a bit incredible to me, but what else is doing it?

2. If my "theory" above is correct, I'm not very comfortable with it tbh, and I'd like to know how to turn off Spotify taking in information like that.

Thanks!

Hi there @uID12352345,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community and welcome!

We can confirm that there's no way the Spotify app can do what you're describing. It could be that either you don't remember adding the songs, or that someone else did. If the playlist isn't collaborative, then we suggest following the steps in this article to secure your account.

Hope this helps. If you have any questions or need anything else, the Community is here for you.

Hey there @uID12352345,

Thanks for the reply.

There is no such list available. You can view which devices your account is currently active on through the Connect icon in the app, but there is no record of devices and IP-addresses available for users.

Hope this info helps 🙂

Thanks for getting back to me on this. I've signed out everywhere. However, I'd be interested in seeing a history of signed-in devices and/or IP addresses/geolocations – such as is possible with a few other services. I can't find such a list on the "my account" page though – am I just not looking well enough?
