Playlist suddenly empty

My Question or Issue

I had a playlist that I made last year that is now suddenly empty on both my laptop and phone. I was listening to it just the other week. 

Because the playlist still exists (rather than being deleted entirely) I cannot recover it in the way recommended in the FAQs. 

Only the one playlist is affected, which makes me feel I weirdly mashed my keyboard and some point and accidentally deleted all the songs in the playlist without even noticing... 

Is there any way to restore a playlist to a previous state (i.e. put all of the lost songs back in it!)

Playlist was of sentimental value, and I'm pretty sad it's gone 

As an aside, suggestions on ways to back-up playlist contents so that this can't happen again would be appreciated...
