Transferring Tesla free account playlist to Spotify premium

Solved!

Transferring Tesla free account playlist to Spotify premium

Tesla have just announced they are discontinuing the Spotify account included with the car.  So I am going to sign up for a premium Spotify account in my own name.  Currently the car has its own Tesla sub account which cannot be opened from anywhere but the car.   Is there any way to transfer this car playlist to a separate Spotify premium account on a phone or laptop so I can then share it back to the car's new premium account when I sign up for it?   I am  in New Zealand, but this appears to be a global issue

Hey @Waimarie,

Thanks for getting back.

So, with the Tesla software update 2024.32.4, there’s now an option to add an email address to the Spotify vehicle account to keep it. That way, you can hold onto your playlists and everything else tied to the vehicle account. This is optional, though, and doesn’t matter if you didn’t use the vehicle account.

If you want to use a Spotify account that’s on Free and not Premium, you’ll need to wait for Tesla’s 2024.38 update or later for that option to be available. Until then, using a Spotify account on Free won’t work in the car.

In December, the vehicle account will lose Premium and revert to the Free plan. I don’t know of anyone losing access to their vehicle account completely, if they don’t add their own email address to it.

So, if you prefer using a Free account, just hang tight until Tesla’s 2024.38 update. 🙂

Hey @Waimarie,

Thanks for coming to the Community.

If you haven’t already, you should have received a prompt within the Spotify app in your Tesla to add an email in order to keep the vehicle Spotify account.

If you don’t see this prompt, make sure your Tesla is updated to software version 2024.32.4 or higher.

Here’s an alternative way to keep the vehicle account:

  1. Open the Spotify app from the bottom bar of your vehicle’s screen.
  2. Tap on the Account tab.
  3. Update your vehicle’s account information.

If you keep this account, it will transition to Spotify’s free service in December, but your liked songs and followed playlists will stay intact. This means you’ll also be able to access your music from other devices—just reset the password to log in with the email address you added. Plus, you can re-subscribe to Premium whenever you’re ready.

If you already have a Premium account, you could also consider upgrading to Premium Family to share Spotify Premium with family members. You can then add the Tesla account as a member of the Family plan. This way, you can keep the car’s music and profile separate from your own while still enjoying all the Premium benefits.

Let me know how it goes! 🙂

Hi Maxim, I clicked on the pop up on the Tesla touchscreen and added a new email but now when I go onto Spotify on the Tesla screen it has a QR code which when I clicked on it says my Spotify account is paired and gives a code to pair but there is nowhere on the screen to put the code. I don’t have a premium Spotify account. Post 1.12.24 will I be able to access the free version of Spotify in my Tesla ( as you suggest in your post) or have I messed up!

Hey @CHHD

Thanks for coming to the Community.

Does the Spotify account that came with the Tesla still have Premium? As far as I know, it should still have it until December.

You can log in at https://spotify.com/account to double-check it.

Oh and by the way, Spotify free accounts are only supported in Tesla software version 2024.38 or later.

Let me know how it goes 🙂

Hi,

I am unable to access Spotify at all. All that comes up is the Qr Code. If I try to search for any music it just brings up basic radio stations. Would a photo help?

Sorry I clicked on the link in your post and it says my plan is Spotify Free

Have just just check software on Tesla and is 2024.32.7

Sorry for being slow getting back to you.  My software is 32.7 and I get a countdown reminder every time I open Spotify in the car.  I click the account button and it gives the choice of personal or vehicle account.  If I choose personal I get a QR code.  That goes to Spotify on my phone and says Tesla wants to connect, so I accept that and after a couple of seconds, Spotify opens on my phone and shows a green car icon at the bottom, but the car screen flickers and the wording changes slightly but stays on the same QR code.  That then just does a loop back to the same QR code over and over.     I can revert back to the car account but the days are counting down!

I did ask on the Tesla New Zealand forum and other owners are getting the same as me.  A few have suggested I need to get a premium account for it to work, but as I only use the car for short trips a couple of times a week I don't really want to pay extra for that. (New Zealand apparently has the third most expensive Spotify in the world!)

So If I understand what you said correctly.... If I currently only have a free Spotify account on my phone, I just leave the car and on December 1st it will swap over to the free personal acount in the car with no other intervention?   I only need to use the QR code to switch over to a personal premium Spotify account.... is that correct?

Thank you for the help.  Much appreciated 😁

Now if only Tesla had explained that in the first place, it would have prevented a lot of hassle.

Cheers 🙃

I did the same as you except I am sure I pressed vehicle account and have the dreaded QR code on my screen which behaves in the same way you describe. How do I revert back to the vehicle account so I can continue getting Spotify until 1/12/24 and while I wait for the software update. Thank goodness for Maxim who has given such great advice.

Hey @CHHD,

Thanks for getting back.

You mentioned that when you visited the Account Overview page I shared earlier, it showed Spotify Free. Are you sure you’re logged into the account that came with your Tesla? I’ll need to double-check with Spotify, but I personally assumed that the Spotify accounts migrated from Tesla should retain Premium until December.

If you’re logged into a Spotify account in your Tesla, you can log out by selecting your profile picture in the top right corner. From there, you can either sign back into the vehicle account or use the QR code to sign in with your personal Spotify account.

If you’ve already added your own email to the vehicle account, the option to sign directly into the vehicle account might not be available anymore.

For full transparency: I haven’t gone through this migration process myself as I’ve always used my personal Spotify account in my Tesla.

But I’ll try to get more info on this whole topic and will let you know! 🙂

UPDATE: The accounts that used to be vehicle accounts definitely keep Premium until December, so I reommend making sure you're logging into the right account.

Hi Maxim

so I clicked on the pop up box on Spotify on the Tesla touchscreen saying I had 47 days to take action. I think I was presented with 2 options personal and vehicle account and I now can’t remember which option I pressed however whichever one I pressed the options came up in my phone to enter my Spotify details which when I tried to wouldn’t accept my email and said “this account already exists” so I out in a different email address not associated with the Tesla or Spotify and it worked until the next day when I had the QR code which doesn’t work for me. I suspect I pressed the personal account option and have to wait till the software update which will hopefully give me access to free Spotify with ads. I wish I hadn’t pressed that pesky pop up! Thanks for you help I really appreciate it

Hey @CHHD,

If you've seen an error message stating that your email address is already associated with an account, then you've likely got two accounts 🙂

The account that used to be the vehicle account is now most likely associated with whatever email address you entered there and can be used for logging into Spotify on all devices.

If you tried logging into Spotify in your Tesla using the QR code and are logged into the Free account on your phone, this won't work since the software doesn't support Spotify Free yet.

Yes that’s what I thought at the time so stupidly entered my gmail account which then prompted an email from Spotify saying I had changed my email address however when I double checked on my Spotify account it’s still my hotmail so I think a dodged a swerved ball there! I am normally good with technology but every so often it confounds me! I will try later to see if I can switch back to the vehicle acct and if not will just have to wait till the update! Am going to download lots of podcasts to keep me going!

Hey again @CHHD,

In that case, your vehicle account is now likely associated with your email address from Gmail, if your Free account is still linked to your Hotmail one 🙂

OK. be prepared for a flurry of messages post software update😂

Success I have Spotify again in the Tesla. Just got in the car and there it was! No idea how but very happy

await 1.12.24 with baited breath!!!

Congrats on getting Spotify back in the Tesla! How did you do it? I can’t seem to get it working, even though I’ve restarted the Tesla twice and logged out from my phone. I’ve also turned off Wi-Fi, but I still only get the option to log in with a QR code. I’d really like to access my old Tesla Spotify account again so I can keep my liked songs and playlists. Any tips?

not as great a result as I hoped. I can get Spotify on my profile but when my husband gets into the car with his phone and uses  his driver profile  it’s the pesky QR code again. I tried logging and trying to log into his Spotify but we couldn’t remember the password so we will tried again another time! Hoping by logging out I haven’t messed my access up!

i really don’t understand what is going on and fully expect my Spotify access to have disappeared again when I next drive the car. If you have someone else who has their own driver profile get them to get in the car (leave your phone well out of range) and see if they can get onto Spotify.
