Artists list is not populated any longer form what I have stored on the device

My Question or Issue

In the new layout on my iPhone, I can see the albums but none of the artists behing these albums is shown in the "artists" section. Why is that? there is no point in adding these manually there since they are there already, it's just another view on the same data. 

What am I missing here? right now the app is more or less unusable since I access music by artist as the first criterion.
