Hello @sivertsol, @sheriffen87, and @Imgrund again. Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community!
I have asked for clarification from other community members, and a few members responded that on their devices, this has also happened to them. Oddly enough, all other results I can find seem to indicate the issue has been fixed.
At this point, I would narrow it down to being an oddity with specific devices, but I cannot say for certain as I'm not an Android or iOS developer myself. I suggest getting in contact directly with Spotify Support, and providing the following information along with your device info to see if they can root out the issue.
You can copy/paste the following information, making sure to change it to your particular phone and OS version, when filling out the contact form following the instructions below.
Manufacturer & Model: Samsung Galaxy Note 3 / Sony Xperia Z5 Compact
Android Version: 4.4.2 KitKat / 6.0.1 Marshmallow
This information should be found in Settings > General > About on a Samsung device, but should be similar if you have another brand.
You can contact support by filling this online contact form:

Reply to the automated email if you receive one (even if it says it is no-reply) and an agent will get back to you as soon as possible.
Welcome to the Community @sivertsol!
I recommend checking your Download settings from within the app to ensure that "Download using cellular" is turned off.
Spotify will periodically download any playlist song changes as they are updated, and if cellular downloads were left on, this could be the reason you're seeing the data usage.
I am going to verify this bug.
I used 9 GB of Spotify last month (was Beta testing the now released version 6.5) and mainly listen to Downloaded songs. Download over cellular is OFF.
I've had Spotify for YEARS with no problem. Something is VERY wrong with this version.
Spotify will use about 200 MB in first minute it's turned on.
Still having this issue, never play songs that isnt saved offline when im traveling. spotify has managed to use 800 MB in 24 hours. I dont risk using spotify when im not using offline mode. havent had this problem in all my years of using spotify. If this problem continues i have to think of switching to another streaming service.
Im on a iPhone 7+ iOS 10.1.1 Spotify 6.8.0
I've had the same problem for the last 4 months. From November 1st to 2nd spotify used 1,2gb. How do I get in contact with spotify in Sweden? They on link to this community.
As said above, bug still exists. No response from company AT ALL.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, Spotify has NEVER taken ownership of this problem, so to say they've resolved the problem is completely false.
Just now I reset my Cell Data and turned off Wifi. I loaded up Spotify. I touched BROWSE, YOUR MUSIC, YOUR DAILY MIX and then DAILY MIX ONE.
I listened to NO music. This used 42 MB of data in two minutes.
I've created a case to the spotify support.
I'll let you know if a have some news from them.
Kind regards,
I created a case too.
I've gotten five emails back filled with template garbage. They don't read anything or care to acknowledge it.
For example, I told them DOWNLOAD OVER CELLULAR was off. They reminded me to turn it off.
I said all songs were offline. They sent me instructions to offline download my songs.
Honestly, the Spotify support people I have talked to are clueless and could care less. I've posted this problem on here two months ago and no resolution?
Embarassing.
Maybe it'll take a data overage class action lawsuit to get them to listen.
Any updats?
For the past 6 months or more, my data usage has spiked incredibly on my iphone. I finally was able to track it to the Spotify app.
The only playlists I use when not on wi-fi are in offline mode (downloaded). To test this, I reset my stats on my phone, play a song from my saved playlist, and the refresh my stats. As it turns out - every time I start a new song in a playist, it adds 20 to 100MB to my data usage. That. is. insane. When I turn cellular off, the song keeps playing (becuase it is downloaded), and the data drain stops. How in the world is this possible. What could possibly be happening in the background???
I'm about to swtich to Apple Music. I'm not going to toggle cellular every time i want the app to work like it should. I also deserve money back for this data drain that has beeg going since like April.
