How does Device Syncing Function

I've been trouble shooting the device syncing feature (specifcally between a MacBook and an iPhone and iPad) while on my university's network. They have a very tight and secure wireless system in place, that does not allow blanket UPnP, open ports, etc. so I've been working with the network engineers to figure out how to get this working and make it permanent across campus.

In order to provide them better information on how to implement a change, I need to know is how exaclty Device Syncing over Wi-Fi actually works. For example, what protocols are being used, possibly any specific ports, etc? What is the limitation exaclty with being on the same subnet? (given the sheer size of the university, it's not possbile for everyone to be on the same subnet, so they've implemented a cross-over subnet system that allows all the subnets to talk to each other, but there are some issues with Spotify's Device sync interacting with this).
