Iphone cannot log in to Spotify "Could not establish a connection to the Spotify service"

I cannot connect to Spotify via the iPhone app on iPhone 5. I have just upgraded my account from free to Premium. When I try to access Spotify through the app it reports the following error:  "Could not establish a connection to the Spotify service". I know that my WiFi is working. I have deleted teh app and swicthed my phone off and on, no luck.

Hey @Drt 🙂 

Would it be possible to disconnect from WiFi and try connecting via your mobile network just to rule it out as being a network issue?

I am having the same problem with an iphone5s  (jailbroken).

I tried the suggested solution but I still get the "Could not establish connection to spotify service" message.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, restarted the phone but nothing solves the problem.  

I was going to upgrade to the paid service but not until I can use it on my phone.

Are you behind a firewall or proxy?

Nothing more than the usual home router FW.  No special settings.  I also get the same result over the Verizon data service on my phone when I am not connected to my homw network.
