My Question or Issue
Just downloaded the new iOS (16.2) on my iPhone and Spotify constantly crashes! Whenever I open another app or turn off the screen or sometimes when I don’t touch it. Spotify is the only app to crash and Apple says it is a Spotify issue. I have logged in and out, reinstalled Spotify, and restarted the phone. No dice. Anyone else having this issue? Help!
UPDATE: It looks like this is happening only when using Airplay (which doesn't help because it's the main way I listen to music!)
Solved! Go to Solution.
Looks like the issue has been resolved in the latest 16.2 beta update (20C5043e) for me. Did a quick test after the update and the app did not crash after I connected to my pod mini. Will give it a more thorough run later.
Hey this sounds very annoying. Does this happen when you are logged into an account. Does it crash immediately on launch or after a couple minutes?
It hasn't happened immediately on launch so far. It seems to happen soon after I start a song, especially (though not exclusively) if I switch to another app or go back to the Spotify app.
It happens the same for me. iPhone 14pro, iOS16.2
It crashes soon after I start a song or right after the song ends.
I also noticed it happens more often if I'm airplaying to a homepod, but maybe it's just random. This makes spotify basically unusable. Please help!
Works ok for me on 16.2 with the occasional crash if I’m listening on my phone but crashes non stop when I try to AirPlay to my home pod mini.
Thanks for the feedback. I have forwarded this to the necessary people to have them look into this bug.
Thanks Thomas. As others mentioned, it looks like this is happening exclusively when using Airplay, so I updated the post.
I am experiencing the crash issue without using airplay. Spotify crashes as soon as I open it. I can't even start to play a song or browse my library.
Quick update on this. I just discovered that if I ask Siri to play spotify, it plays fine as long as I don't interact with the app.
It is not just spotify, it is also Tidal, and mist likely others too but i havent tested others

Didn't fix it for me. updated to 20C5043e and Spotify still crashes as soon as i open it. I can't even start playing a song, let alone connect to an external speaker. Right now the only way I can play Spotify is to open Shazam, pick a song and click the open in Spotify button. This will open Spotify to that song, and then i can go my Library and play other playlists/songs. If I click the Home button then it crashes, so i have to stay away from it.
Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app? I would try clearing the cache first to see if that will resolve the issue.
Hi Everyone, as some of you have mentioned, this does appear to be a bug within iOS itself causing 3rd party audio apps to crash while AirPlaying. For those of you still experiencing this issue can you please provide me the following information:
What iOS version are you on?
Are you on the iOS beta? If so are you on the latest and are you on the developer or public release?
Does it happen only when Airplaying?
Thanks
Thanks. It is working now after re-installing Spotify. I tried the re-install when i ran into this with 16.2 beta1 and it didn't help, so didn't think about doing it again. But this time it worked.
Hi Thomas,
I experienced the issue when running iOS 16.2 beta1. When I upgraded to iOS 16.2 beta2(20C5043e) the issue persisted until I re-installed Spotify, and then it went away. I did try the re-install step when i was on beta1, but that didn't help.
The issue was not related to Airplay for me. Spotify would crash as soon as i open it. I don't even have a chance to play a song(airplay or otherwise). At the time it was crashing, the only way I can play Spotify is to open Shazam, pick a song and click the open in Spotify button. This will open Spotify to that song, and then i can go to my Library and play other playlists/songs. If I click the Home button then it crashes, so i have to stay away from it.
In case you still experiencing this issue and you have an Apple TV then what you can do is launch Spotify and play some music. After playing music open the spotify app on your iphone and it will say that the audio is playing through an Apple TV. From there you can use your iPhone to play music on your Apple TV.
Hmm Weird. That doesn't seem like the issue other people were having. Glad it seems to be fixed now though!
Let me know if it still persists.
