Hello there,
I've been using the Spotify iPhone app for about 2 months now. It worked like a dream for the first month and a half but now it's barely usable, in my opinion. When I start the app up and play a song, the app will not automatically play the next track, no matter if shuffle is on or off. I've tried researching the issue before making a post so I'm certain this is not the issue where the next track is not automatically played when you're playing a track from Search (a setting that developers apparently purposely put in--which has its merits). My app is not playing the next track no matter if it's from the Search screen, one of my playlists, or one of my friends' playlists.
I've uninstalled/reinstalled, rebooted my phone, checked all the settings (to my knowledge) and still have not come up with a solution. I am currently running iOS 5.1 on my iPhone. Am I crazy? Spotify is a great product but not being able to use the mobile app is really pushing me to cancel my subscription.
Thanks,
Eric
P.S. Obviously a reply with a solution would be ideal but any reply from a moderator would be great. Even one that just says "We've logged the issue and are looking into it." At least it will give me hope for the future .
Solved! Go to Solution.
Edit: I don't think it's just isolated to the lock screen anymore. I just tested #4 in the bullet points below and the song did not play automatically. Also, I now realize that #2-#4 have more to do with user input rather than the lock screen. We've just come back to the crux of the original problem: Spotify won't play songs automatically (without user input). Back to square one...
I think I've narrowed down the problem a bit more. It seems like the next track doesn't play automatically if the iPhone's screen locks at any point during the song. I've done a few things to confirm that it's the lock screen:
I've also observed, while going through #2, that Spotify automatically shows the album art/title for the next track with about 5 seconds left on the first track. I don't know if this is a feature or not (to show users the next track) but I thought I would mention it.
Thanks,
Eric
which streaming quality are you all using? i noticed that the skipping problem seems to remain when "low bandwidth" is selected for streaming. if i choose "high quality" i have no problems at all with track skipping neither through wifi nor 3G, and of course with locked screen etc. i haven't tried "extreme" though as i don't need such a high quality for streaming!
Yaay problem solved!!!!!!!!!! Thanks oluv!! Under settings - set stream to HIGH. I guess if it is set to Normal you may have the issue. Hope it fixes everyone elses. 🙂
I have almost completely discontinued using Spotify because of these issues. As I said before, with the latest iOS update came the return of Spotify crashes to add to the misery of random play-stops.My kids started calling your service "Crashify" and it seems to fit. I have been posting here for months now with no resolution, including providing whatever details I can to help your de-buggers. I've been patient, but the patience is lost and replaced by frustration.
How much longer should I pay for a service that works so poorly that I've stopped using it?

Just a quick word from my end... I was having the same problem... only playing one track at a time on my iPhone 4 with the latest software update... really frustrating. So I read the posts and one user suggested checking the amount of space available on my phone, and it was down to like <300mb. I deleted some videos and unused applications and got it over 1GB, and it has been working again even over 3G coverage... I don't know what the threshold is, but this makes some sense to me. On the TuneIn radio app, it warned me I didn't have much available space and that it might not work properly.
I wish Spotify had a similiar warning, if a given amount of memory is needed. This may not be everyone's problem, but it seems to be mine.
Sorry for this issue, and no, no given amount of memory is needed to run the application and this issue is fixed in the upcoming 0.5.3 release that will be out very soon. After this update and if you have very low memory, it should always play the next track when streaming.
The OS was interfering with Spotify whenever the device was running very low on space, the OS would clean applications caches and that made the next track unable to play the first time, and this would happen for every track played, which is very annoying I agree. Keep a look out for 0.5.3 🙂
Although the existing issue with Spotify not forwarding to the next track automatically might not be solved yet, we're still unable to re-produce it but we are working very hard to re-producing it and so far we haven't been able to, so hopefully it will be fixed with this version, so please let us know if the issue still persist or not after updating.
Thanks for all the feedback guys, the feedback gives an idea on what we need to focus on and fix a.s.a.p 🙂
I have the exact same problem and it's driving me nuts! Can't find answers anywhere.
I'm having this issue too, and if you search the web, it's a widespread problem.
Any answer from developers? Problem still occurs...
Hi David
Yes I had installed the last version yesterday afternoon...And problem still happening in next song...
This may or may not be a common thing. But it happened to me:
I have found that if you use, for example, your Spotify-login and pays the Premium cost and then for some reason (forgetting the Spotify-password but remember Facebook's) change to use the Facebook-login it can differ them to look like two different accounts where (in this example) the Facebook-login was not used when you paid...
Therefore when you login to an iOS app it stops as you do not have "paid" on that login. Try to login with the account name you paid Premium with...
Might be a solution for some peeps.
I had the tunes play for exactly 0:38 and stopped (guess that was the cache kicking in how much the memory held). All of them was like this and then change back to the "paid account". Worked. I guess it should be the same account but this made the difference to make it work.
Hi David,
How would I go about changing these settings? The Settings menu in the iPhone app doesn't seem to have options for this. Thanks for the response, btw!
Best,
Eric
I just turned off gapless playback and added a medium length crossfade. No dice. It's still not playing the next track automatically.
Only reason why I am on this forum is for this issue. I tried to toggle the gapless play back and change the crossfade, no dice....
Why am I paying $10 a month for a service I can't use?!
wtf
I'm definitely about to cancel my subscription too because of this.
