My Question or Issue

Recently I’ve noticed the volume in and out of my app isn’t linking up. If I turn the volume to a certain level in the app, if I exit out and change it, when I go back to the app it will automatically change back to how it was before I left and changed it. I’ve tried turning off the devices Lock Screen thing, which did nothing, and I also tried switching a bunch of other random stuff off and on but nothing seems to change it.

Hey @Marulistens,

Welcome to the Community and thanks for reaching out!

It sounds like you've tried a couple of things already, but let's try some more troubleshooting.

Could you try to log out > restart your phone > log back in to see if that makes any difference for you?

It's a good idea to remove any apps or services that Spotify may be connected with or affected by. Make sure your OS and Spotify version are up-to-date too.

In case the issue persists, could you ask a friend or a family member to log in on your phone and test this out to see if they get the same issue?

We'll be on the lookout for your reply!

The logout and restart worked for a moment, but then it went straight back to doing the thing again. I looked for an update and there was one, which I downloaded. Again, it helped but only for a second before it went back to being weird.

I can’t think of any apps or services that might be interacting with it.

I tried signing in with another account, but the problem was still there.

Hi there,

This is exactly the problem I came for to this forum. I did all the things: restart, update..

I use the volume slider of iphone to set the volume super low at night, but when I return to the app it switches it back on.

There seems to be a hack that works, but requires patience: use the volume slider and let it sit for a couple of minutes, then return to spotify. It seems to have forgotten the previous volume level.

I have a iPhone 12.

Thanks for getting back to us @Marulistens!

Are you experiencing this with Spotify only or with other streaming apps as well?

Could you also check if the Background App Refresh for the app is toggled on? Go to Settings> scroll down to Spotify click on it and you should see the option there. If it's toggled off - make sure to change it.

In case that doesn't do the trick and you’re still experiencing the same issue, @WendyP has suggested a workaround that might help you solving it. Would you mind trying this out too? Feel free to share the Spotify version you're currently running.

Keep us posted on how you get on.

Hi Lyubka,

For me the 'app refresh' is already toggled on. So unfortunately not the solution.

I only experience this with Spotify, no other apps (netflix, Ziggo tv, apple music)

Hi @WendyP,

Thank you for your reply and for the troubleshooting you've done so far!

As a next step we recommend that you try removing your cached data to see if that makes any difference.

Also, can you make sure that you're running the latest OS?

Let us know how it goes so that we can continue to assist you if you need us to 🙂

Take care!

Live, love, laugh and listen to music 🙂

Hi Jeremy

Removing the cache (offloading the app and reinstalling in ios 16) seems to have done the trick (so far!)

thanks for the suggestion!

Where do I click " accept  as solution"?

Update: it worked once.

the problem is back.

Any more suggestions?

Hey there @WendyP

Thanks for getting back to us.

Would you mind asking a friend or a relative to log in to their account on your phone to check if they can replicate this with their account?

On another note, could you check if the same happens using a different device?

We'll be on the lookout.

Hi Eni, thanks for your reply

I am currently unable to replicate the issue consistently. It still happens, but not all the time.
I have also logged in as another user but can't say for sure now whether this is different to my own account.

For now I am using the work around: set up spotify and finish with setting the volume, so that I won't have to return to spotify. If anything changes I will check in again.

I've contacted support and tried with multiple accounts and am reproducing the same issue. Looking forward to a fix or other things to try!

Hey @Keysox,

Thank you for letting us know!
Can you replicate the issue on a constant basis and does it occur only on one device?
On another note, could you check out this thread and the solution proposed & let us know how it goes?

Many thanks!

Vasil, how is the solution proposed in the link you send supposed to help?  The link addresses an issue with Windows and focuses on playback and speaker settings. We're specifically (or at least I am) about iphone issues

Hey @Vasil, thanks for getting back to us. Like @WendyP mentioned, I'm not sure what else to try. The device I can consistently reproduce on is:

  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • Version 8.7.66.438

I have the same issue on my iPhone 13 (iOS 15.6, latest Spotify version). When I go back on the Spotify app, the sound level increases or decreases by itself. It’s quite annoying since it can make the volume suddenly too loud !

Hey folks,

Thanks for your replies.

@WendyP, just to confirm, has the workaround you mentioned kept working? On another note, would you mind sending us your iPhone's exact Spotify version?

@Keysox, could you let us know which troubleshooting steps you've already tried with our Support team? That way we can avoid repeating any steps. Also, would you mind letting us know the OS of your iPhone?

@dridri1, could you let us know if this started happening after a specific event such as an update? Also, we'd like to know the exact Spotify version you have installed on your iPhone.

We'll be waiting for your replies.

@Eni Well I’ve just bought an iPhone 13 so the problem started with this new phone and new iOS version (previously had an iPhone 6S running iOS 14). The version of the app is 8.7.68.568 (I updated it today but still has the issue).

@Eni, I've tried the following:

  • Uninstall/install/reboot/launch
  • Uninstall/reboot/install/launch
  • Logging in with a different account
  • Disabling "Optimize listening/auto adjust quality"
  • Using AirPods instead of the phone's speaker
  • iOS 16.0.1
  • iOS 16.0.2

Hi Eni,

thanks for checking in.

I have the latest Spotify version: 8.7.66.4389

And the workaround works less well at the moment.

Even after listening on low volume for quite some time, pausing quite some time and when reopening spotify the volume changes back to a previous setting.
