My Question or Issue

I’ve noticed what I think is a UI scaling issue on iOS. I don’t know what version of the app it started on, but it’s a recent bug and is still there on the latest version. (8.6.78)

When viewing an album, the upper edge of the album art is hidden by the notch. (See below)

And when you scroll down, approximately the upper third of the text of the album title is similarly hidden “underneath” the notch.

The issue with text also shows up on an artist’s profile, in the what’s new section, and liked songs, but not in new episodes, recently played, or settings. In what’s new, the notch completely covers the text, and the back button sits in the corner of the display, to the left of the notch, instead of below it as it does in recently played and settings.

I’ve noticed a few other spacing issues with the notch, but these are the ones that actually cover content.

The notch doesn’t show up in iPhone screenshots so I had to illustrate the problem.

I see the same issue on iPhone 13 Mini / iOS 15. Eg. playlist name is completely hidden behind the notch when you start scrolling down.

Thanks Ver! Clean reinstall fixed the issue for me.

Hey @kapteeni,

Thanks for keeping us posted 🙂

Glad to hear that it worked out and everything looks as expected again.

Reinstalling the app did solve the problem temporarily, but I noticed two or three days ago the issue was back.  Checked the update history in the App Store and this coincided with the update to version 8.6.80.
It’s not a huge/urgent issue, but I’m curious if anyone else is seeing it after the update.

Hi @_Ian,

Thank you for your reply in this thread.

Can you try to perform a clean reinstall of the app again?

If that doesn't do the trick, can you provide us a screenshot so that we can have a closer look directly from your end?

We'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Take care!

Live, love, laugh and listen to music 🙂

I wasn’t going to do a second clean install since it’s just a small bug and I didn’t want to have to redownload all my music. But! I’m now on version 8.6.82 of the app and all content is displaying properly, with no interference or overlap from the notch.

Hey @_Ian

Fantastic news! Give us a shout if it starts misbehaving again; we're always here to help.

Have a good one 🙂

Hey there everyone! This same issue has been plaguing me ever since iOS 15 rolled out. Maybe every fourth time I open Spotify in a day, the UI will shift up so that the album text, or the little text at the top of the screen telling me what playlist is playing gets shoved much closer to the notch. Force closing the app via the app switcher and re-opening Spotify usually gets the issue to go away….until it comes back a couple opens later.

I have tried a clean reinstall of the app what feels like 10 times now, and the issue still persists. It also appears to mess with the functionality of podcast episode listings. Whenever this glitch occurs, I also find myself unable to scroll to the very bottom of a podcast’s episode listings. The last one or two episodes will be below the line where Spotify will naturally let me scroll, and I have to over scroll and keep my finger held down to fight Spotify from jumping the list back up should I lift my finger.

Hey @NoahAV,

Thanks for your post.

Would you mind sending us a short screen recording which shows this issue in action? That way we can get a clear grasp of what's going on and report it to our tech folks.

I'd be really helpful if you also send us the following:

  • Your device's model.
  • The version of the Spotify app.
  • Any other troubleshooting steps you've tried so far.

If you haven't already, try clearing the app's cache to see if that does the trick:

  1. Open the Spotify app, tap Home and then Settings.
  2. Tap Storage and tap Delete cache.

Make sure also that you've disabled battery optimization for Spotify as it can interfere with the app's functionality.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers!

Video

My device and app info is:

Device: iPhone 12 Pro

App Version #: 8.6.84.1353

I have already attempted clearing the app cache multiple times, and it does not fix the issue. I have also followed the fresh install directions (clear cache, offload app, then delete and reinstall) and this has not fixed the issue either.

Above is a linked video I uploaded to YouTube (unfortunately turned into a short automatically) of some of the UI issues I’ve been experiencing. The podcast glitch where I can’t scroll to the bottom of the episode list has yet to occur on video for me. But in the video you can see:

- the “all episodes” episode sort bar glitching and detaching from the top of the screen

- the UI shifting up too high and the text moving so far up that it becomes partially hidden by an iPhone 12 Pro’s notch

I'm still seeing this on my iPhone 13 Mini, app version 8.6.84.1353. Exactly as on NoahAV's video, the title of the playlist is placed too high, and it gets hidden behind the notch.

Closing the Spotify app and restarting it fixes it for a while, but it comes back. Same with clean reinstall, the issue always comes back.

I captured the scroll bug on camera! Same as last time, it got uploaded as a YouTube short. But as you can see, I cannot scroll to the bottom of the podcast’s episode list. The episode at the bottom is hidden below Spotify’s function to make the scroll action bounce back.

Video of the bug

Hi folks,

Thank you for your replies and sharing this video.

We'd like to have as much information as possible to get this reported. @kapteeni could you confirm if you also have the same issue with the listing of podcast episodes, just like the last video that was shared by @NoahAV

Also, please don't forget to share with us the exact OS version you're currently running.

Keep us posted.

Hi MafeG,

Yes, I see the same issue with podcast listings, but not always. Sometimes it seems coincide with starting playback just before opening the listing.

And I also see the glitch where the sort banner is detached from the title banner (which is drawn too high and hidden behind the iPhone notch).

Both can be seen in the attached screenshot. Listing is scrolled down as far as it will go.

And this is with iPhone 13 Mini / iOS 15.11 / Spotify 8.6.84.1353

Popping by to add that I am currently running iOS 15.2

Hi folks!

Thanks for all the info you've sent so far.

We can confirm that the right team is aware of this, but providing a permanent fix proves difficult due to the hardware based aspect of the notch and how it differs on different models. However, the app is constantly optimized, so it can improve with time.

Until then - fully closing the app or restarting the phone seem to effectively enable the app to recognize the notch position and adjust elements.
