iPhone control issues

Is there a fix for issues with headphone controls? En route to work this morning trying to skip to next track via headphone in line control and Apple Music app kept playing instead of Spotify.
I've reset my iPhone, deleted and re-installed Spotify and doesn't seem to make a difference.
The only way I can get it to work is by closing Spotify app and closing Apple Music then restarting Spotify. This works for a bit then back to square one.
I refuse to allow the Apple system update as this has been reported to slow down everything.
