login error 409 on an old iPhone 4 (MC603ZP)

Solved!

login error 409 on an old iPhone 4 (MC603ZP)

Hi, I have a "Duo" package for my wife and myself, and now we have resurrected my wife's old iPhone 4 for our 7 year old daughter so that she can listen to music. I have used my own login credentials (the super long user name) and the password (which works on every other device we use) but I constantly get a login failure with the code 409. Can anyone please help? Thanks!

iPod touch user here. Same issue 😭

Hi Billy-J

Agreed they only support the app on later IOS, but it isn't the solution, or explanation as to why the app STOPPED working on old devices running old operating systems around Jan 23rd.

I believe it an inadvertent change - if it was a designed change :

a) there surely would have been a customer service communication warning of old devices becoming redundant,

b) it wouldn't crash, it would return a 'Unable to run on old os' style message.

A deliberate design change to the Spotify server software that can no longer respond to device requests  eg 'login, list artists, select song, stream song' could have happened, but it is a surprising lack of empathy to existing clients and also to the environment [I for one have to upgrade from old iphone and legacy docking station [perfectly serviceable and high quality] to something newer.  What a waste - and i think a publicity faux pas for Spotify.

I hope someone from Spotify can explain further.

same for iPad 2 smh… I’m a premium user so this is sad ngl

Marked as solution

Hi everyone,

We want to clarify what is happening and why. Currently all support for Spotify app versions released in 2016 and older is being deprecated. This includes:

  • App version released before 7.4.0 on iOS and Android
  • App version released before 1.0.47 on desktops

At Spotify, we are always working to provide our users with the best possible listening experience. We continuously encourage users to use the latest version of Spotify as it contains the newest features and bug fixes. For more information, see our Support pages.

Older versions of the app often have broken or missing features due to their old interface, which cannot support the latest Spotify experience. In addition some of these old apps have security vulnerabilities associated with underlying older technologies. These vulnerabilities are not available on the latest versions of the app and can only be eliminated by shutting down services built with older technologies.

If you are using a device which can no longer support the latest app and operating version, then we recommend you use the Spotify web option https://open.spotify.com/ in your browser on your device, if supported.

We appreciate your feedback regarding this deprecation and we've passed it along to the right teams at Spotify.

Hi Alex

Thanks for the more detailed response. However, reading between the lines of your euphemistic statement that older versions are being "depreciated" (why not just say straight out "we don´t want to support these anymore"?), it still seems that Spotify is unilaterally, and without any notification until now forced by a wave of discontent, forcing thousands of paying users to go out and buy new hardware to replace perfectly functional legacy equipment.

What is more, the much-touted "Spotify web option" also doesn´t work (at least not on my old but perfectly usable Vista laptop), so no help there.

I'm not in IT, but is it really so hard to keep older versions of Spotify functional? As other users have mentioned, this does nothing for sustainability. Enforced obsolescence is pretty ugly coming from a behemoth like Spotify.

i will now be only using my icloud music library, thanks spotify……. thanks a lot…….

This is really disappointing. I just went to update my Spolity Playlist on an older Ipod to find Error 409.  Reading this tread, my device is now rendered obsolete when it has always worked perfectly well.

...incredible...2016 and older...7 years...in times in which many many companies include and live ESG standards to their companies values...

Again: 2016 and older...we are not talking about late 90s and windows 3.1...

In my perspective spotify should think about their way of how to treat and communicate towards consumers and respect of where the money comes in the end...consumers which have left spotify are gone for probably forever...

2016 and older...

This is so frustating, you should also fix or update the older versions of Spotify. So we, that have an older device can enjoy using Spotify.

Same here..this is a pain....used to work fine on old iPhone

Has Spotify come up with a solution yet for the users of older iPhones who they recently locked out with error 409?

I have also been using an iPod touch and as I do not want or need the newest Spotify experience, I would like to just be able to log in again. Really hope (and expect) this to be fixed

Same problem from Spain.

Premium account on my Ipod Touch 4.
It was still working perfectly like the first day. I used it only for Spotify, with my downloaded list.
This allowed me to listen to my favorite music, without having to connect to the Internet.

Now unused.
It's no use keeping my Spotify Premium account anymore.

What a disappointment.

Same issue here. Have premium Spotify and use an old iPhone 4 for listening to my music and podcasts. I prefer to use the old iPhone so I don't have to be too connected to the world and leave my everyday phone at home. Beyond frustrating that they've done this. Time for Spotify come up with a solution and rectify this.

What a low move wow use the browser when it not work you go to the browser pls use the app becuase the we dont support the browser you use wow really thats soo dumb

Hello Alex. I've tried on the browser (I'm using an old iPhone with iOS 10) like you suggested but it says it's an unsupported browser...as I'm unable to update safari or my iOS this is not a solution...can you suggest another way?

I agree. This super lame. Unfortunately, all other streaming services have seemingly followed suit. Include Apple. I cannot put the Apple Music streaming app on my iPhone 4 either. I guess we just....WANT to destroy the planet in the interest of financial gain. It's an old phone. Who cares? It's not like there is a ton of human hours that go into maintaining an already built older version of an application. Just put it back online so we can have what we want.

What is highest number of Spotify.app version which could be installed on iPhone 4S iOS 9.3.6 version? I'm on 7.1.2 and probably update to iOS 9.3.6 would allow me to run supported Spotify.app >7.4.0 version. Could somebody confirm that iOS9 (iphone 4S, iphone 5) is not supported by Spotify.app  anymore. Thanks

Most of that is in their reply is scare tactics. As a software company they only needed to say they can’t guarantee support or functionality for devices before….. Instead they took proactive action to disable tens of thousands devices that played music beautifully. Intentionally. I will be joining many I know in leaving Spotify after many years. Shame.

Hey Everyone,

I do have 6 phones and 3 of them serves for the cars.

Iphone 13 pro for the new generation BMW.

Iphone 5s and Iphone 4s for the older gen BMWs.

The Iphone 4 i have got the same error as you guys mentioned here.  But iphone 4s n 5s still working normal as of 3/15/23.

The problem with the 4S even tho i can listen Spotify, first of all there is a reason i keep the older gen Apples and the reason is older gen BMWs. If any of you familiar with the BMW knows that Combox and head unit grabs the connection from the iphone and opens its own app on the iDrive (Bmw Entertainment Screen).

Thats a built in app which pops up as soon as iphone connects to bmw via USB cable or Phone Cradle.

Luckily even tho the car is old, you can still use usb cable with iphone 14 pro to open its own Spotify App on iDrive.

But the reason i use 4S is it comes with 32 pin socket which has Analog Video Output and you can watch videos thru the phone using the BMW's original Media Cradle.

And the issue i am having with 4S ,it doesnt recognize the bmw anymore while iphone on the cardle. Before the depreciation,  bmw logo n sporify logo was popping up and iphone 4S was making legal disclaimer for the Spotify. But Now, even tho car playing the songs thru the speakers, Bmw's own spotify App doesnt show Album Covers and saying Spotify is not available on the iDrive Screen.

So you guys are not only disabling old phones, but also the older cars with the Spotify feature.

When the thing comes to an explanation,  you guys are good at saying there are security risks on older devices while all the people with older devices had 0 safety issue untill now!

That explanation just doesn't cover your action. You gotta come up something more smarter than that.

You guys need to reconsider to reactivate this on certain models.

Note : Iphone 4S still have running Spotify with the version 8.4.62.490 The
