Hi there @Robyn11,
Thanks for reaching out to the Community and welcome!
The sort and filter option in Podcasts only changes the order you see the episodes. If you have Newest selected, the newest episode you see will be the first one on the list. And if you have Oldest selected, the oldest episode will be the first one on the list. However, this doesn't change the way the episodes are played. Podcasts are always played from oldest to newest. The queue will always be in order. That means if you listen to the newest episode, there are no more episodes to play from that podcast and you will get a recommendation if Autoplay is on.
If you want to listen to an older episode from that same podcast once the newest is over, you can add it to your Queue. You can also create playlists with the episodes you want to listen to and that way, you can listen to the episodes from newest to oldest.
Hope this helps. If you have any questions or need anything else, the Community is here for you.

Thank you so much for your helpful reply xx
Bij mij speelt Spotify na elke podcastaflevering de trailer opnieuw af. Ik moet altijd handmatig naar de volgende. Heel vervelend in de auto of op de fiets. Wat kan ik hieraan doen?
Hey @Clau14,
Thank you for joining the conversation. Hope you don't mind me replying in English, as that's the official language of the Community!
Thats an odd behavior. To start investigating this, and to make sure we're covering all the basics, would you mind confirming if you have already performed a clean reinstall of the app on your device? If not, we'd recommend following the steps mentioned in this article.
If the issue persists, would you mind checking on a different device (using your own account) to see if it makes any difference? If you don't have another one available, you can borrow one from a friend or family member to test it out.
Lastly, could you confirm if this is happening with all podcasts you've tried or is just a specific one? In case of being specific, could you share the link/URI of the podcast to take a better look?
We'll be on the lookout.
so it looks like great idea to improve spotify in the way podcasts will be played as you see it in your preferred order. Described behavior is counterintuitive
I usually watch podcasts in antichronological order, meaning I start with the newest episode and work my way into the past one episode at a time. That is why I always enable the "Unplayed" filter and sort podcast episodes by "Newest" when choosing what episode I want to listen to next in the Spotify android app.
However I noticed that when I do this and then click on an episode and let it play through to the very end, Spotify will automatically play the next newest unplayed episode (or a random podcast recommendation if that already was the newest unplayed episode) instead of the next oldest one. This is unintuitive for two reasons:
Firstly, It traverses the list of episodes - sorted from newest to oldest - backwards.
Secondly, it does not allow me to listen to podcasts in antichronological order without clicking on each episode individually. Unlike users who listen to all podcasts in chronological order, I cannot just let one episode end and have the next one start automatically.
Mine is sorted from new to old, but if I play yesterday's podcast, it will them play 2 days ago right after, instead of the most recent. drives me crazy! how do I fix this???
First, I want you to know that I really appreciate Spotify. I am writing to you either to teach me how to do it because maybe I am the one who does not know, or to make a suggestion. I follow several podcasts and recently I discovered that the application lists all the new episodes of the podcasts that we follow in our library of followed podcasts, it is absolutely great, it saves me from having to wander from one podcast to another to find the new episodes. On the other hand, where I encounter a problem is when reading the new episodes, I want to listen to them in the order in which they were released, it is obvious. The newest always being first at the top this is perfect this is how it should be, so when I am behind on my podcast episodes I go down to the oldest unread podcast and I expect the player to continue up, to the most recent episodes but this is not what happens, the player continues down to the older episodes and that I have already listened to. The choice of reading order is missing… Can you help me?
I'm a bit confused by this answer. You're saying that Spotify removed the setting in the app to play podcast episodes in order. Now you have to individually create a 'play list' or a queue for everything you plan to listen to. Is that the way it is now?
Hey there you, Yeah, you! 😁 Welcome - we're glad you joined the Spotify Community! While you here, let's have a fun game and get…
