Spotify stops playing and responding randomly

Spotify on my android has been abruptly stopping the last few days: the display will be off and spotify playing through my headphones, but then it will just stop and not respond to commands unless I unlock my phone and go into the app to press play again. Also the spotify widget is missing from my lock screen. Please help!
