Connecting to the car automatically plays Liked Songs playlist, with or without Car Thing

Hey folks,

We've received reports that connecting to the car automatically plays Liked Songs playlist, with or without Car Thing.

This is being investigated.

Hey folks,

Thanks for your patience while we looked into this issue.

The main issue in this thread (Liked Songs automatically playing when connected to the car) should be resolved by now.

If anyone's still experiencing this issue and your app is up to date, we've moved @parksca5's most recent comment to this thread, in which we encourage everyone to post their issue if it's specific to the Liked Songs playlist. We can then forward your reports to the right teams.

If you have a similar issue but it's not specific to your Liked Songs anymore, please make sure to post a new thread in the relevant help board here.

Thanks!

bueller?

Spotify, this is really mf’ing annoying. I swear Spotify programmers use Apple Music and have no idea what’s going on.

It’s been months and they’ve come out with a million updates and none of them address this issue. And the guy saying “clearing your cache fixes everything” is talking out his behind and knows the problem is still ongoing but that no one at Spotify will fix it.

The "fix" from user Vasil did not work. Clearing cache, updating the app to latest version, does nothing to fix the problem.

Try again Spotify.

Hi everyone,

Some fixes were put in place earlier this year, and it did resolve the issue for many users.

However we are aware of issues still being experienced with resumption of playback for some users.

If this is the case for you, please:

  • Tell us what you expected to happen vs what actually happened
  • Whether you use iOS or Android
  • The date/time this issue occurred
  • Write in the post that you consent for us to look up your account to check the logs

We are actively investigating the reports that you provide - but we must have all the details as noted here.

Thanks for your patience.

Two things I've noticed, could be related but let you decide.

First:

When connecting to the car and opening up Spotify (using Android auto), it will automatically start playing liked music. Not what I expect to happen, I expect to be able to open Spotify app and it not play anything until I pick a playlist/Album or go to my "Now Playing" section and hit play. Autoplay is not enabled on my account.

Second:

Using bluetooth headphones, I've noticed the above issue as well but recently when I open Spotify app on my phone while my bluetooth headphones are connected, the "now playing" songs will start playing again. Once again, Autoplay is not enabled. I expect nothing to be played until I click on a playlist/album or go to my "now playing" and hit play.

I tried the second option today between 10 AM and 10:08AM EST, and experienced the same thing. I'm using an Android phone with the latest available Spotify app (8.9.16.593). You can look at my logs for more info.

Update: I also had cleared my cache before this in attempt to fix it. I've logged out the account, logged back in, no difference. I also uninstalled the app and re-installed, still no difference.

I expect that when I get in my car, usually with Spotify already open and
paused in the middle of a song I was listening to, that when my car
connects, there will be no interruption. However as soon as my phone
connects to my car, it will stop playing the current song and start either
playing my Liked Playlist or recently within the last month, it will play a
random playlist like my Broadway playlist which I haven’t listened to in
over 6 months!

If a simple fix such as clearing your cache worked for a few users back
when the problem was first reported but not everyone, that means nothing
was done to fix the issue overall on the app side despite the dozens of
“updates” Spotify puts out. And unlike other apps, Spotify never actually
tells you what they’ve done in their updates so they have plausible
deniability for why so many issues never get fixed. The simple fix was the
equivalent of calling your internet provider and them telling you to “turn
it off and back on”.

Thanks both for the details. Will look into this.

Just to clarify @parksca5 the clearing cache is to ensure that the fixes that were put in place are actually deployed to your device/app version. If this doesn't happen, or the app isn't restarted, then these fixes won't actually be deployed for you.

Now that a couple of months have passed since those fixes, it will no longer matter if you clear cache/restart app. The issues being experienced must be different.

Hi!

Yeah, I did the cache clearing and restart twice thing when it was first
suggested and I even tried it before it was suggested in the thread cause
last time I was having an issue with Spotify it was the only recommendation
given to me. So I tried it before and after the fixes were put in place and
the problem persisted. At one point I was checking the App Store everyday
to see if there was an update so I could do the update and the cache
clearing/restart, but like I said Spotify smartly never tells you what
they’re fixing in their updates so I just had to cross my fingers and hope.
I know I did it when the fix was implemented cause I’ve been updating
religiously since the issue started months ago.

So I know it’s the same issue; the fix just didn’t work for everyone. It
also happens to my mother’s Spotify and three of my friends. None of us
share an account but we’ve all been having the same issue for months.

Hi @parksca5,

Thanks for the info.

Would you mind confirming the model of your device, the date/time this issue occurred and let us know if you consent for us to look up your account to check the logs?

Thanks!

parksca5
Sure if you think that will help. I have an iPhone 13. I dot. Remember the
exact date it started but I know it was the end of November that it started.
