Podcast episodes in Queue not playing automatically

Hey everyone,

We're receiving reports about podcast episodes not playing automatically one after the other in Your Episodes, playlists, Queue and the show itself. If there are 2 episodes queued one after the other, the second one gets skipped. If there are podcast episodes queued when playing songs, the podcast episodes are getting skipped. Some users report that when there's a podcast episode in the queue it will get skipped and will break the queue.

Hey folks,

Thanks for your patience while we looked into this issue!

We’re happy to confirm that this should now be fixed for everyone! Just make sure your app is updated to the latest version.

If you're still having trouble, make sure to post a new thread in the relevant help board here.

Thanks!

Hello @CarlosE

things i did to resolve:

- restart the device

- clean uninstall (including data deletion) and reinstallation

Furthermore, this issue persists in any network condition: Wifi, Cellular or Offline.

Also i found out, it only occurs when i add a Podcast to the queue. When I add a "regular" song to the queue, it will work as expected.

Unfortunately i cannot test with another mobile device.

I tested some more and tried some scenarios. I hope it will pinpoint the rootcause a little more:

Given, I am listening to a music playlist in Spotify on my android device.

When add a Podcast to the queue, and view the queue, then i can confirm, that the Podcast is in the queue list.

Now the scenarios:

  • A) If I do nothing, then the current song finishes, i can see that the queue and the podcast disappears and Spotify continues to play the playlist
  • B) If I hit "Next", then Spotify plays the Podcast.
  • C) When I play the playlist on my phone, but add the podcast to the queue via the Windows 10 app, then i can see the Podcast appear in the queue. But Also here, after the current song finished, the queue disappears, not Podcast will be played but the playlist continues to play.

I recorded the behavior on my phone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCFQ3Crehn4

Scenario B (refereing to previous post = hit "next"):
0:01 listening to Song Playlist
0:08 add Podcast to Queue
0:19 view Queue
0:30 hit "next" Podcast plays

Scenario A
0:46 Play Song Playlist
0:50 add Podcast to queue
1:00 view queue
1:13 fast forward the song
1:16 view queue, Song ends, queue disappears (including podcast), next song in playlist starts

Hey folks,

Thanks for keeping in touch and for all the info you've shared so far.

We'd like to further investigate this. To do so, those of you who haven't mentioned it already, could you let us know the make, model and OS version of your devices, along with the exact Spotify version you're running?

Once we have that info, we'll go ahead an report this to the right teams so they can look into it.

@Apalog, thanks for sharing that video, it'll be really helpful for the investigation of the issue.

We'll keep an eye out for your replies.

I have no filters turned on that i am aware of.

I always download every episode and they still dont automatically play.

im_xavy

Had the same exact issue with this one and also did all the instructions mentioned, but am still encountering the same.

CarlosE

Hey @im_xavy,

Thanks for your reply.

Remember to send the info I requested above so we can have this reported.

We'll be on the lookout.

I have the exact same issue as ae28 - podcast playlists don't autoplay no matter where I play them from, on both android and desktop, and the podcast episodes keep trying to play past their run time (ive attached a screenshot that shows this). Also, the sorting options just don't work at all for podcast paylists - it just does whatever it wants and picks a random order - and when I open the app on my phone it just picks a random episode to start on out of thin air.

I've done clean reinstalls, there are no filters, music playlists work fine. I've got a Samsung Galaxy S9+, running version 8.6.48.796 of Spotify. Would really appreciate this being fixed beacuse it's genuinely a horrendous user experience.

I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S9+, running Android version 10 and spotify version 8.6.48.796 on my phone.

My desktop is Windows 10, running spotify version 1.1.65.643.g2d707698-a as far as I can tell - it doesn't overrun the timer on desktop but the autoplay doesn't work.

My Question or Issue

On the new 8.6.48.796 version of Spotify, aside from many many other bugs, this one makes the app basically unusable for me. If I play a podcast episode that lasts for example 10:00 minutes, and the episode comes to an end, instead of playing the next episode the timestamp will exceed the 10:00 min mark and just keep increasing.

What I have tried so far

- Clean uninstall and reinstall the app.

- restarting my phone

- Go into settings and turn Autoplay off and on again.

- try a different podcast (it happened with all podcast that I've tried so far but not with songs)

No luck!

The only workaround for me was to download an 8.4.x apk from a third party website and install this instead of the official download from Google Play Store. Not an ideal solution! Everything works perfectly after downgrading to 8.4. Unfortunately the app keeps updating itself every day, so every night when I want to listen to my podcasts I need to uninstall and downgrade manually again.

I will attach a video demonstrating the bug.

Is there a way to fix this or at least keep Spotify from updating automatically? Because I am obviously much happier with the older 8.4 version.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards

Elias
