Dark/Shaded Box While Watching Podcast on iOS Connected To Tesla

Solved!

Dark/Shaded Box While Watching Podcast on iOS Connected To Tesla

Plan

Premium

Country

USA

Device

iPhone 14 Pro

Operating System

iOS 18.2 (issue has occurred in older firmware as well)

My Question or Issue Statement

A reoccurring issue occurs when watching video podcast (specifically, JRE) on my iPhone, while driving in a Tesla Model 3 and plugged in via genuine Apple USB-C / Lightning cable and connected to the Tesla via Bluetooth.
Background
I rent Tesla Model 3’s at least once a month and can confirm the issue has occurred in multiple Model 3’s at varying firmware versions on both the vehicle as well as my iPhone. It definitely occurred in iOS 17, possibly even iOS 16.
Description

A portion of the video displays a dark, shaded, rectangular overlay on the left side of the screen making that section of video appear darker than the rest.
I’ve attached photos displaying this occurring during playback as well as photos of it not occurring at the same time stamp of the same podcast.
The overlay does not go away unless the app is completely killed and restarted. If switching content, like to music, the album art is displayed properly, but when switching back into the podcast, the overlay is visible again. I’ve tried to re-create it on purpose and I’ve been unsuccessful, but I believe it has something to do with being connected to the Tesla via the cable and or being on the wireless charging pad while driving with the phone unlocked playing video and either minimizing the video to open another app or putting it into picture in picture mode and or locking the screen and opening again. Some combination of those actions is what’s creating the glitch.

Hi there @tcafranz,

Thanks for reaching out and providing all this information.

We recently resolved an identical issue and you can see all of that here. The app version 8.9.96 or later don't have this issue so please update your app to the latest version and see if the issue persists. If it happens after that, please let us know and send us a screenshot of the version within the app so that we can investigate further,

Keep us posted.
