iOS App can't change volume on Amazon FireCube

iOS App can't change volume on Amazon FireCube

My Question or Issue

Just added an Amazon Fire Cube TV G2 to my system. When controlling play from the iPhone, I cannot control volume on the Fire Cube. If I switch to one of my two Echo Shows, it works as expected. On the Fire Cube, I can control playlists, switch tracks, pause, play etc. All works fine. But the volume control has no effect.
I am playing through an AV receiver, which I suspect may be related. Using the Fire Cube volume control works fine, as does saying "Alexa turn it down". However, I cannot adjust it from my phone. Yelling at Alexa works, but it's a rather inelegant solution and doesn't allow for fine adjustments.

As an experiment, I tried using the app to control the desktop Spotify App on my computer playing via the AV receiver.
For that app, I got the expected behavior. I can control the volume using the app, however the maximum volume is controlled by the AV receiver's volume setting. That's perfectly fine and the way I thought it would work on the Fire Cube as well. Basically you are controlling the source volume while the AV Receiver sets the highest possible volume based on what you have it set to. So you turn it up louder than you'll want, then use the app volume control to dial it back. Works great, even though you're not adjusting the receiver volume. When using the fire cube controls, it directly changes the volume on the Receiver itself. That works fine too but I don't really need that.

Hey @bobharbison,

Thanks for posting here 🙂

Could you share with us which troubleshooting steps you've tried so far? That way we'll able to avoid any repeating steps.

Keep us posted.

I've restarted the app on both my phone and the FireCube.
I've launched with the app open on the FireCube, and the app not open. (The app then opens when you switch the sound to the FireCube.)
Verified that changing volume works fine on the iOs app when using an Echo Show or the Desktop Computer.
Changed my PC to output via the same AV receiver. Was still able to adjust volume using my phone when playing on the PC.
I can change tracks, playlists, pause, play, via the phone app just fine. All functions other than volume work as expected.
Using the FireCube's remote or saying "Alexa lower the volume" will change the volume setting.

Hi @bobharbison,

Thanks for your reply and details.

Please note that some features, such as remote volume control aren't available for all device combinations and it's highly probable that your setup isn't supported, at least currently.

This could change in the future as we continuously try to improve Spotify's compatibility with as many devices as possible, however we can't give you an exact time-frame or guarantee this will be the case, as these types of changes fall under general improvements and optimizations.

Hope this clears things up. Let us know if we can help you with anything else.
